Walmart Unveils $500 Laptop

$500 Laptop

Walmart has unveiled what is sure to be a big seller for them - a barebones laptop for just under $500. The Balance notebook comes with the Linux operating system, Linspire, and is equipped to allow users to connect to the internet via either dial-up or broadband. Additional features like a CD-burner can also be added on for an additional cost.

While it's great that Walmart is introducing a portable computer which is affordable for almost everyone, my question is how good is this computer? If someone just wants to do basic operations like play around on the internet and do some word processing I'm sure it would be fine. But for anything more complicated such as working with graphic programs I suspect that it probably wouldn't be so great. Hopefully people who are thinking about buying this laptop will think about what their needs are and do the research to make sure that this is the computer for them. Because if this computer doesn't have the necessary memory and speed to run a lot of programs, many people might be better off saving up some extra money for a more expensive laptop or desktop computer that will allow them to do everything that they want.
