Rogers Clemens Won't Be Retiring After All... Again
Clemens Re-Signed by Astros for $22 Million
After winning the 2004 National League Cy Young Award, Roger Clemens said he was leaning towards retiring... again. It should come as no suprise that he changed his mind and he will now be returning to play for the Houston Astros in 2005 for $18 million. This is the highest salary ever for a pitcher and the highest one year salary for any player. Clemens was outstanding in 2004 so there's no question he deserves to be well-compensated but $18 million is a lot of money for a 42-year old, who is surely at increased risk of injury than younger players regardless of how well he might take care of himself. But after not being able to sign Carlos Beltran the Astros not only had some spare cash on hand but probably also realized that they needed to re-sign Clemens to make their fans happy with at least one thing they did this off-season.
