Todd Helton Loses Weight

Todd Helton

Before Balco, a player who lost weight in the off-season probably wouldn't attract much attention. But post-Balco and in light of increased testing for steroids by MLB, any time a player loses more than a couple of pounds it's going to get people's attention. So with that perhaps in mind there is a story in The Denver Post about how Todd Helton is losing weight in the off-season due to his new fitness program. Apparently Helton's power numbers were down last season and the thought is because he was too bulky hence the push to lose weight. I can't help but wonder if the Rockies or Helton's people were afraid that if he just showed up at spring training having lost the weight it would raise questions in people's minds about whether the weight loss was due to stopping the use of steroids. Of course it's also possible that the "fitness program" is a cover because Helton did in fact stop using performance enhancers and he's shrinking. I'd like to think that's not the case because I've always liked Helton a lot but you never know. Even the best of guys could be using performance enhancers.
