Ward Burton Still Doesn't Have a Ride for 2005
From Jayski's: AND II Jeff Burton said his brother, Ward, does not have any firm racing plans for this season. "He's a capable driver," Burton says. "Unfortunately, he's gotten caught up in the fact that people want to hire 12-year-olds."(USA Today/AP)(1-20-2005)
It's not just that all the teams want to hire young drivers. XM played Jeff's press conference from yesterday at Daytona and he said that Ward has gotten offers but he's turned them down. In addition, in spite of Jeff trying to convince him otherwise, he will only consider Cup rides. Of course he will also only take a ride that is going to be competitive. So I don't think that leaves Ward with many options and it may make it unlikely that we'll see him back racing any time in the near future. I can understand him not wanting to take a crappy ride. That wouldn't do his career any favors. But I don't understand why he wouldn't consider racing on a different level. There's not as much money or attention paid to the Busch and Truck series but it is a way to continue racing and potentially get back to Cup if he impresses somebody. He has no chance of winning races or making an impression on anybody if he's not racing at all. It's been said that he's on the top of everyone's list if they need to make a driver change but I'm not sure about that. If he's not racing he's out of sight, out of mind, not to mention he seems like he's picky so that may make some teams shy away from him.
