Yet Another Former Yankee Back

Yankees Sign Rey Sanchez

Back in August of 1997, the Yankees traded for Rey Sanchez to play second base. A lot of people barely remember him but I distinctly recall how awesome he was defensively. He then went on to play for a bunch of other teams but apparently the Yankees never forgot about him either because they just signed him for a second go-around in pinstripes. He's 37 so he's surely lost a step in the field and he was never able to hit much but he can play a lot of positions so as a utility guy he should be ok. It's not like they threw at lot of money at him either - just $600,000.

I just wish that the Yankees would look at more players who never played for the Yankees. Sometimes it seems like all they do is re-sign former Yankees, usually when they're at the end of their careers. The Yankees probably want to recapture some of the magic of the most recent World Series wins but there is no way to recreate the specialness of those teams. They just need to work on building the best team they can in the present instead of trying to relive the past.
