Photo of the Day - Great Falls

Great Falls, Paterson, New Jersey, January, 2009. I made my first visit to Great Falls in Paterson this weekend and it definitely won't be my last! It would have been an incredible sight in any season to see the water spilling over the falls of the second highest waterfall on the East Coast but it was an even more beautiful and awesome sight with the falls half frozen. I could have spent all day there taking photos!

Photo of the Day - Ice

Had a bit of an snow and ice storm last night into this morning which made for a good opportunity to take some ice photos. I'm probably one of the few people who was hoping that the storm would have brought even more ice - I love taking photos of the ice covering everything! This particular photo is of ice that formed on the side of my car.

Photo of the Day - Snowy

We're in the midst of a big snowstorm in the Northeast and I got the urge to go outside and take some photos in the snow. Not so easy when your camera is in a zip-lock bag for protection, your balancing an umbrella as you're trying to take photos and your hands are getting frost-bit! At any rate, I was fascinated by the snow on the branches of the pine trees - they looked like hands reaching out to me. If not for the battery in my camera running out I probably could have been out there all day taking pictures of them, trying to capture those "hands" just-so!

Cape Cod National Seashore, 2008. This was something pretty neat - the wind was pushing around this tiny piece of seaweed in a circular motion and it made that circle in the sand. I wonder how long it had been doing that and how long it will continue?

Photo of the Day - Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park, New Jersey, April, 2008. It was a beautiful day out today so we took a ride down to the Jersey Shore. First we stopped off at Mt. Mitchell Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands to see the view of Sandy Hook and in the distance, Manhattan. Then we had lunch at Klein's Fish Market in Belmar where we enjoyed a very yummy lunch outside. After that we continued down the shore to Island Beach State Park, the biggest stretch of undeveloped barrier beach in New Jersey. It's truly gorgeous there and even more so with the wind kicking up the waves like was the case today. I wish I lived closer so that I could visit there more often. It was a great day for sure!

Snow Scenes
Last week we were hit with snowstorm in New Jersey during which we got about eight inches of snow which seemed like a lot since it was the biggest storm this winter so far. Well, that's nothing in comparison to what upstate New York routinely gets! My friend Jules was kind enough to share with me some photos from a recent storm in her area - yikes, that's a lot of snow!

As short as I am by the time the snow stopped falling it was probably taller than I was!

I sure wish there were some waterfalls near me - I'm always fascinated by moving water like waterfalls and ocean waves. It's really cool to see this waterfall all iced over yet still flowing strongly.

As much as I don't like the cold and snow too much, there's something about a coating of snow on the trees that's really beautiful to see.

I really love this photo! I wish that we had some wide open spaces like this close to where I am where I could take some winter photos like this! I like living in the area where I do because it's very easy to get to everything but for photography purposes it would sometimes be nice to live in a more rural area.

Photo of the Day - Brian Vickers

Pocono, PA, June, 2007. Red Bull Racing is the only Toyota team that didn't replace any of it's drivers with road course ringers (one reason being that A.J.'s an experienced road course racer, and Brian is RBR's #1 driver so he's not getting replaced). Brian has done okay at Infineon, thought not great, but his average start is really poor - 33rd, so that could present a problem for him, which is unfortunate because given that my other favorite Toyota drivers are going to be sitting this one out, I'm really hoping that Brian makes the show so I can have him to cheer for.

Photo of the Day - Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park, Seaside Park, NJ, May, 2007. Wow! I've always loved the Jersey shore, but I had no idea there was such a gem of a park on the NJ shore until yesterday when Jim and I took a trip to Island Beach State Park. It's absolutely beautiful there! The park is a 10-mile barrier beach just south of Seaside Heights, that's one of the few remaining areas on the shore that's undeveloped. I love the ocean to begin with, but I really feel in love with the beach there - the water was so blue-green and the beach so clean. It's amazing that this park is so close to the craziness of the over-developed boardwalk of Seaside Heights with it's games and rides. Overall, we had a great day yesterday driving down the shore in Jim's father's convertible!

Seattle Fish Market, Seattle, Washington, September, 2006. The Seattle Fish Market is a big tourist attraction, but Jim and I were underwhelmed. If we lived in Seattle it would be a great place to shop for fresh fish and produce. But we live in New Jersey and it's unlikely any of the food we would get there would travel well! So we didn't spend much time in the fish market. But I did find a produce vendor who had his fruit and vegetables lined up very presicely. Since I love patterns his stand definitely caught my eye.

Photo of the Day - Cape May

Cape May, New Jersey, August, 2006. I really need to start taking notes about which houses and B&Bs I'm taking photos of and on what street, because I find when I look back at the photos it's hard to remember which some are. What I love about this one, besides the purple color, is that there's that nice big porch, but also that enclosed area on the right. Plus the pretty flowers in front. I wish I had a house like that!

On News Photography Sometimes Being Unreliable
Jim Lewis has an interesting column in Slate regarding some of the recent controversies with major media outlets like the Associated Press, Reuters, The Charlotte Observer, and others in which photos were found to be fake or doctored beyond what acceptable guidelines are for the use of Photoshop. Lewis points out that even when an image isn't manipulated in Photoshop, that doesn't mean that viewers are seeing exactly what the photographer saw with his own eyes when he took the picture. The camera "sees" and records things, different than the human eye does. There's the things that photographers do - they use zoom lenses, take photos from a variety of different angles which can make the same scene look very different, or they might crop their photos, to give just a few examples. And then once the photos are out of their hands, an editor might make their own changes in terms of cropping or adjusting things slightly in the ways that are accepted in Photoshop. So while the vast majority of news photographers go out of their way to be ethical, there is still not a 100% guarantee that what ends up in the newspaper or in a magazine is exactly what the photographer saw.
And the thing is that a photograph only represents one moment in time. Sometimes we look at photographs and see someone is similing and assume they must be happy or see that they're frowning and assume that they're upset with the person that they're with. But seconds after the photo is taken, the smile could be gone. Or the frown might have been directed towards someone else. We often see photos out of context and it can be hard to know whether the caption that goes along with the photo, or what we assume to be true based on what we see in the photo, is really true.

Jekyll Island, Georgia, July, 2006. I was perplexed by this. As I walked down to this beach, there were signs warning about how the water wasn't safe to swim in due to elevated bacteria levels, I think it was. In addition, there were a ton of dead fish just like this one all over the beach. Yet a lot of people were in the water fishing - I hope they weren't planning on eating anything they caught! Yuck!

Photo of the Day - Paulinskill Viaduct

Paulinskill Viaduct, Hainsburg, New Jersey, April, 2006. Jim and I took a ride out to the Paulinskill Viaduct today. I wanted to get out there before all the leaves were on the trees, which would make it hard to take photos of the viaduct as it's out in the middle of the woods and also before there were too many bugs. In addition, NJ Transit may one day in the next couple of years starting running trains over the viaduct again which would make it a lot less accessible than it is now. Today was the perfect day to go as it was really nice out - not too hot and not too cool, but also there wasn't a cloud in the sky. So we had a great time exploring, though we didn't end up going all the way to the top, and taking photos, some of which will end up in this blog this week.
It's really hard to capture just how huge the viaduct is - it's really quite a sight seeing it rise over the treetops!

In all the time that Jim has lived in this area we've never been to Richard W. DeKorte Park until today. The park is a 110-acres right in the middle of the Meadowlands, an area known more for the New Jersey Turnpike and Giants Stadium than anything related to nature. But the park is a refuge for birds and likely lots of other wildlilfe. There are observation and photography blinds, as well as other viewing areas. In one of them the sunlight through the wood made for quite an eye catching pattern.

Reed Sorenson's Photo Diary
I guess Nascar and photography is a bit of a theme today. Fujifilm is going to be sponsoring Reed Sorenson's #41 at Atlanta this weekend so on the Fuji website they have a photo diary featuring Sorenson which will apparently be updated each day this week with photos and brief diary-like entires about some of the things that Sorenson does through the race on Sunday. I think it's a great idea and it's interesting to see some shots of Sorenson on the plane flying to Atlanta and other photos that fans normally don't get to see.
However, what would have been even better, at least to me, is if Sorenson was taking the photos himself. I guess they didn't want to do that because the photo quality might not be as professional and part of the point of this is to show off one of Fuji's digital camera and then Sorenson wouldn't be in the photos himself. But drivers always have people taking their photos constantly during each race weekend or at appearances. I've long wondered if the tables were turned and the drivers were given cameras what they might take photos of. In a way that would be seeing things through the driver's eyes and I think that would be fascinating to see things from their perspective.

Faces of Racing
I'm always coming across things related to sports photography and photography in general on sportsshooter.com. Today was no exception as the work of Scott Robinson was featured on the front page of the site. Robinson has a book coming out this summer, Faces of Racing which is essentially portraits of... yes, you guessed it - the faces of racing, specifically those involved with Nascar. Robinson also has a website, facesofracing.com and the photos on it are exceptional. Robinson has a mix of both candid and posed shots all of which allow the personalities of the people he's photographing to shine through. Of course it grabbed my attention that there are several of Michael Waltrip and it turns out that Robinson is a native of Owensboro, Kentucky, which is also the hometown of Michael, Jeremy Mayfield and the Green brothers. I don't know whether the photos on the site are the same ones that will be in the book but I will definitely have to get this book when it comes out.
It's the kind of project that really appeals to me. I love taking candid shots of people and things and nothing would be better to me than being able to do that in the Nascar garage area on a regular basis. For many people going to a race is all about the racing and getting as close as possible to the drivers. Those things are part of it for me as well but it's also about taking pictures. I've been lucky enough to twice be in the garage area and there was such a rich canvas of things and people to photograph. What I really like about Robinson's work is that he's not just taking photos of the drivers, he's got images that show emotion, personality and the human side of everyone in the garage area. Not only that but Robinson doesn't just focus on the superstars - at least on his website he's got photos of everyone from Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to Mike Helton to various crew cheifs and crew members.

Photo of the Day - Chris Crumley

Dover International Speedway, Dover, Delaware, September, 2004. Two years ago I won an Operation Marathon auction to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp and what I won was one of the best experiences of my life - spending the day with Michael Waltrip's #15 team on race day. So I got to watch the race from the #15 pit. All of Michael's crew that day was exceptionally nice to us but it was also clear that they were outstanding at what they do. Chris Crumley was Michael's front tire changer then and he has since become a part of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s crew on the #8 team. This week Crumley was named DEI's pit performer of the week, a feat he achieved while changing tires with a hairline fracture on the knuckle of his left thumb. Ow! It's amazing what the crews do in the matter of seconds and I love watching them at work. The hard work of the crews often go underappreciated and I'm glad that DEI takes the time to single out the crew members who really shine.

Sean Penn Scuffles With Photographer At Brother's Funeral?
The New York Daily News is reporting that Sean Penn got into a fight with a photographer at yesterday's funeral for his brother, Chris. If this incident actually happened I'm sure that it will be used as a way to portray Penn in a negative light but I'm astonished that things have gotten so bad that the paparazzi intrude on a private funeral service to the point where they are close enough to get in a physical confrontation with the deceased's family. While I don't have a problem with celebrity photographers who go about their business in a respectful way I do find it distasteful the way there seems to be no boundaries that some paparazzi won't cross. Just because someone is famous doesn't mean that they give up all of their rights to privacy. Famous people are still human beings who deserve some consideration, particularly at someting so personal and emotional as a funeral. Photos are taken at funerals all the time when the person being buried is someone well known or who has been in the news. So I completely understand why there might have been some photographers there. But I find it distressing that chasing after a photo might have become more important to at least one photographer than showing compassion for the family while they were burying a loved one.

Pocono Raceway, Long Pond, Pennsylvania, July, 2005. There's not been much in the way of Nascar news or anything too newsworthy about Michael Waltrip or Steve Park. I miss racing! So because I've been thinking about how much I can't wait for some on-track action, even if it's just testing, here's a photo of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s pit crew waiting for him to come in for a pit stop. This is Michael Waltrip's old crew from 2004 who I had such a great time meeting at the Dover race so I made a point of spending some time watching them at work at Pocono even though I spent most of the time near Michael's pit. Now that the #15 team is barely even a part-time team I wonder which of the guys from both of these teams are no longer with DEI. Both teams seemed to be outstanding at what they did so they would be an asset to any team that they end up working with.

Panoramic Images
Stock photography is a big business because there are always companies who are looking for certain types of photographs for publicity pieces and other uses and it's more cost-effective to buy the rights to a stock photograph than hire a photographer to do a shoot. There are a lot of large stock photo agencies that have thousands and thousands of photos in many categories but there are also some small stock photo agencies that specialize in one particular type of photograph or theme. Panoramic Images is one such smaller agency that specializes in yes, you guessed it, panoramic images. Poking around their website is pretty cool.

Time Warner Center, New York, New York, December, 2005. I meant to post this before the holidays but better late than never right? A while back Jim and I visited the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle in Manhattan. The shops and restaurants inside were very high-end so I don't think we'll be able to afford much there though it was fun to look around. What was really cool was the way it was decorated for the holidays. Those big stars in my photo changed colors and it looked really awesome especially after dark. I wish I had been able to take more photos but the battery in my camera ran out. I was lucky I was even able to get this one!

B&H Photo and Video
B&H Photo and Video is a mega-store located in mid-town Manhattan that is a paradise for photographers. Anything and everything related to photography is available at B&H, either at their store on on their website. Any time I'm looking for a piece of camera equipment, big or small, I go to B&H first because usually their prices are better than anyone else's and based on my experience they are very quick to ship things out that are ordered online. In fact, 70% of their business comes from online purchases so I would guess that there are quite a few people who have also had as positive an experience ordering through their website as I have. Although I enjoy looking through all the photography books they have at the physical B&H store, I don't enjoy going in person as much as I do visiting their website because of how busy and chaotic everything is. To get something simple can turn into a lengthy process but it's still neat to occasionally visit the actual store and browse.
B&H was formed in 1973 and has grown into a huge company that employs 800-900 people, many of them Hasidic Jews. In fact the store closes on Friday afternoons and remains closed until Sunday in observance of the Sabbath. They are also closed on a variety of Jewish holidays as well. An interesting tidbit is that one story is that the B&H name means Baruch Hashem, or Blessed be God. Well, B&H certainly has been blessed because they have a tremendously profitable business.

Stanford University Auctions Off Official Photographer's Credentials For Football Game
Sports photographers over at Sportsshooter.com are outraged because Stanford University auctioned off official photographer's credentials for a Stanford vs. Notre Dame football game. The auction winner, who paid $2,425 for the opportunity, will spend the day with Stanford's team photographer, David Gonzales, and will get to visit the press box and then take photos from the sidelines during the game like any other credentialed photographer can do. Apparently, the auction raises money for Stanford University student athletes, though I'm not sure what the money will ultimately be used for.
The photographers at sportsshooter feel that only professional photographers who make a living off of taking these photos belong on the sidelines and that this auction will only be the first of many. So that soon photo credentials to sporting events will be made available to the highest bidder and professional photographers will have to deal with even more amateurs taking photos for personal use getting in their way while they're trying to do their jobs. On one hand I can understand why they're not thrilled with this auction. It's true that the more people there are on the sidelines, the harder it is for them to easily get the shots that they need. At every sports event there are definitely people who get access to areas that the general public doesn't who don't respect the privledge that they receive and get in the way of people who are trying to do their job. I've seen this myself in the garage area at the two races that I've been lucky enough to go to. It's also true that if just anybody can get a photo credential then there's a lot more people taking photos and it effects the bottom line of the photographers who are trying to make a living off taking photos at these games.
However, I don't see a problem with this particular auction. It's a one time auction where the proceeds will presumably benefit student athletics at Stanford. It doesn't seem like they have plans to auction off credentials on a regular basis. In addition, the auction winner is going to be accompanying the team's official photographer who will presumably lay out some guidelines for appropriate behavior on the sidelines. So it's not like this person is going to be allowed to do whatever they want as they will be taking photos under the supervision of someone who understands the importance of photographers operating in an official capacity being allowed to do their jobs unimpeded.
I look at it like when I won the Operation Marathon auction to be Michael Waltrip's guest at a race. Myself and the other auction winners last fall were around the #15 team for most of the day on race day when the teams are incredibly busy. We were in the #15 pit and I'm sure that the crews weren't thrilled to have an extra person there while they were trying to go about their business. But we weren't unchaperoned. Michael's PR person was with us at all times and while I can't speak for the other auction winners, Jim and I were very careful to stay out of everyone's way. Those auctions raised a lot of money for the Victory Junction Gang Camp through Operation Marathon, as do all the other similar auctions that race teams do thoughout the year. So as long as the winners of these various auctions behave appropriately I can't see how an auction that benefits a good cause, whether it's a charity or Stanford University is a bad thing.

Looking towards Central Park from the top of Rockefeller Center, New York, New York, November, 2005
Yesterday Jim and I met his Mother in Manhattan and did a lot of cool things including going to the Museum of Modern Art. But even better was our visit to the recently re-opened observation deck on the 70th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The observation deck has been closed to the public since 1986 but since November 1, the public has been able to visit once more. It costs $14 for adults, $9 for children to visit "Top of the Rock" but it is well worth it because the views of the city are outstanding! We were lucky and visited on a clear day so we could see a considerable distance all around on every side. The Top of the Rock is open 365 days a year from 8:30 a.m. to midnight. I'd love to go back at night to see the city all lit up and I'd also love to go at sunset - that must be incredible!

Syracuse University Objects to Student Including Photos Taken at Athletic Events in Online Portfolio
Sportshooters.com is an online resource and community geared towards sports photographers and other photojournalists. Many of the the members are professional photographers who make a living from their photographing, including more than a few who work for large, well-known organizations such as Major League Baseball, The New York Times, USA Today and Sports Illustrated to name a few. In addition, there are also a lot of student photographers who, by interacting with the veteran photographers on the site, gain valuable insight into being a better photographer as well as constructive criticism on their photography. I've been visiting the site for a year or two myself and I've learned a significant amount about sports photography, as well as the business of photography and working for a newpaper or magazine myself. In short, sportsshooter.com is a professionally run website which is an extremely valuable resource for anyone involved in sports photography, photojournalism or just has an interest in either of those fields as I am.
So it was with some surprise that I read that Syracuse University objected to two members of sportsshooter.com including photos that they had taken at Syracuse sporting events in their portfolios on the site. Both members, Kirk Irwin, who is a graduate student who takes photos for the independant student newspaper, The Daily Orange, and Niko Kallianiotis, who is a staff photographer at The Watertown Daily Times, a local paper, took their photos down immediately upon being threatened with a loss of credentials to photograph games. Apparently Syracuse feels that sportsshooter.com is some sort of commercial venture and that posting the photos on the site constitutes a commercial use. Well, all these two photographers were doing was including them in their portfolios to show to other members. Though an argument could be made that they were using them to sell their photography skills, the photos themselves aren't being sold or otherwise used for commercial purposes. So it appears that Syracuse might not be clear about what the purpose of the site is.
What amazes me is that Syracuse University just like every other college or university is an educational institution. Their main purpose is to teach students and help them reach their educational goals. While I fully support Syracuse University's attempt to ensure that their trademarks are protected and that the photos are used appropriately it boggles my mind that they would interfere with a student's attempt to educate himself about photography and learn from professionals in the field. I suppose Syracuse doesn't view a website as a valid way to educate one's self but with that site that notion couldn't be further from the truth. One of the biggest ways that students learn about the professions they want to go into is by interning and interacting directly with the people who are already in that field they are interested in. In fact according to Irwin's portfolio on sportsshooter, he is interning at the Syracuse Post Standard. His presence on sportsshooters also provides him with an avenue to learn. Now, Irwin and Kallianiotis didn't have to take down their portfolios completely but it seems to me that Syracuse should be a wee bit more supportive of a student's efforts to educate himself and seek opportunities in a field he is interested in.
Apparently Syracuse had meetings with the involved parties and there is an on-going discussion in an attempt to resolve the issue. But I hope that it is resolved in such a way that photographers can include photos from Syracuse athletic events in their portfolios.

Nikki Sixx Discovers Photography
Best known as the bassist of Motley Crue, Nikki Sixx has a new passion besides music and that's photography. But he's doing more than just taking photos and putting them up on his website. He will also be diving head first into photojournalism, taking a trip to Bangkok, Thailand to shoot for National Geographic. Based on what he has up on his website Sixx appears to have a talent for photography. I especially like his abandoned building photos. But how did he end up with the assignment for National Geographic? There are so many talented photojournalists out there and an assignment for that publication with such a high level of photography seems like it would be kind of difficult to get for someone who isn't among the elite of photojournalists.

Photo of the Day - Ocean Grove at Sunrise

Ocean Grove, New Jersey, 2002. There were great sunrises each morning in Ocean Grove with all sorts of beautiful pinks. I'm reminded of those sunrises because each morning this week as I've been driving to work around 6:30 a.m. I've seen some truly amazing sunrises. The Manhattan skyline has been silhouetted against a beautiful pink sky with the sun rising slowly behind. I wish I was able to pull over and take some photos but unfortunately since my commute is so long these days and I don't want to take the risk of being late I really can't. Maybe some morning...

Photo of the Day - Abandoned Vermont

Addison, Vermont, 2005. In honor of Halloween this is probably the creepiest photo that I have of anything this side of the Paulinskill Viaduct which isn't really all that spooky unless one believes all the tall tales about the place. I never did find out anything about why and for how long this house had been abandoned.

Photo of the Day - Flamingos!

Renaissance Island, Aruba, October, 2005. Renaissiance Island was the private island that our hotel in Aruba had. It was great because after a short boat ride we found ourselves on an uncrowded island with beautiful beaches. I very much enjoyed spending time there in one of the hammocks there. Besides lots of amenities like food, there was plenty of wildlife there as well such as iguanas and a number of flamingos. I've never been so close to flamingos before and they were pretty neat to see. They wouldn't let you get right next to them but they were obviously used to the presence of humans. I think they must have also gotten fed by some visitors since they would walk around as if they were looking for handouts. They also seemed to enjoy napping in this particular spot on the beach - maybe the water on their feet helped cool them off.

Photo of the Day - Jimmie Johnson

Pocono, PA, July, 2005. I figured I would take another break from posting Aruba photos and post one of the winner of tonight's race - Jimmie Johnson. He's won the past four races at Lowe's and tonight rallied from having to start at the back due to an engine change, not to mention some mid-race issues, to win. I'm sure the conspiracy theorists will be out in full force with all sorts of theories about how Nascar fixed the race to give the win to Jimmie at the track bearing his sponsor's name. But I don't see how a race like we saw tonight, or any race for that matter, can be fixed. Manipulated? Perhaps. Fixed. No.
At any rate, this photo was taken during driver introductions. As the drivers walked up the ramp towards the stage there were a few people waiting to get them to sign various items. I assume this was either for the track or for a charity.

Photo of the Day - Light

Aruba, September, 2005. One night we went out to eat at an outstanding restaurant, The Flying Fishbone. All the seating is outdoors on a small beach, right by the water. So we sat next to the water at sunset and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. I had a delicious steak and shrimp dish and Jim had fish that he also loved. It was definitely one of the best meals we had in Aruba! This is a photo of the lantern on our table.

Photo of the Day - Iguana

Aruba. September, 2005. There were a huge amount of lizards all over Aruba, something which I thought was pretty cool but non-reptile lovers might have a few issues with. In the area around our hotel there were also plenty of Iguanas. On Renaissance Island, the hotel's private island they were fed each day at noon and the iguanas definitely came out in full force at lunch time. This is one iguana looking for some more handouts.

Photo of the Day - Aruba

Renaissance Island, Aruba, September, 2005. The first of what I'm sure will be many photos that I'll be posting in this space from Aruba. I had never been to anywhere in the Caribbean before so I was amazed by the color of the water! Photos can't do justice to how incredible the blues of the water were. And it was so clear too! I could see straight down to the bottom even when it was fairly deep. So that meant when I was in the water I could see schools of fish as they swam by me. On top of all of that the water was nice and warm too. Heavenly.

Marginal Way, Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2005. Something about the blue of the sky and of the water really caught my eye. It's high tide in this photo but at low tide I was walking in this cove where the water is quite high picking up wave smoothed stones. It's incredible how much Marginal Way changes during the day at high and low tide.

Photo of the Day - Sterling Marlin

Pocono, PA, July, 2005. In keeping with the Nascar theme today here's a photo of Sterling Marlin at Driver Introductions at Pocono. Not the greatest of all photos but it give me an opportunity to ponder Sterling and his new deal briefly. Apparently Sterling signed with MB2 to drive for them for the next couple of years. But there's not been an official announcement yet as they are still waiting on some sponsor-related issues such as who exactly that sponsor is going to be. That makes me a little nervous on Sterling's behalf. What happens if they can't find a sponsor? Probably nothing good so I hope that they have a few primary sponsors to choose from rather than they are still searching for one.

Obviously it's been abandoned for many years but there is a theatre group that apparently uses it as the set for periodic Shakespearan plays during the summer so the ruins are maintained somewhat.

Kodak Tries to Change It's Image
Kodak Ads Build Up Its Digital Image
This week Kodak kicked off a major ad campaign designed to change their image in the hopes of making consumers view them as a digital powerhouse. Kodak's EasyShare camera is the top-selling camera in the United States but they suffered a net loss of $143 million in the second quarter. In addition according to an annual listing of the top 100 global brands, Kodak is ranked at 62th with a value of $5 billion, down from 27th in 2001 when the value of the brand was estimated at $10.8 billion. And apparently one reason for that is that people still think of Kodak as the company that made film and made snapshots possible rather than a company with digital products.
So the new ad campaign with the slogan, "Keep it Forever, Keep it Kodak," will feature some of Kodak's newest and most cutting edge digital products such as a new version of the EasyShare with WiFi capability and a credit card sized photo viewer. But ads are only one part of the makeover that Kodak plans for itself. They will also change the packaging of their products as well as the way they present themselves to partners. In an indication of what a major project this is the campaign took two years to design. It's very important to the future of Kodak that this campaign is successful so it will be interesting to see what kind of results it might bring down the road.

Photo of the Day - Portland Head Light

Portland Head Light, Portland, Maine, July, 2005. Yes, another photo from my trip to Maine last month. I have so many I could post but I'm trying to alternate with some that aren't from Maine too. At any rate, I've long wanted to see this lighthouse in person and I'm so glad I finally got up there! The park that it's in, Fort Williams Park, is really, really nice! I just wish it had been a bit cooler because it would have made it a little easier to explore some of the trails.
I'm currently reading a book about the history of the Portland Head Light and apparently Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a frequent visitor because he grew up in Portland. During his visit he would sit on a favorite rock (sounds like me!) and collect his thoughts. In 1850 he published a poem, "The Lighthouse" no doubt inspired by the Portland Head Light. It's too long to post the entire poem but here's one part I like:
Steadfast, serene, immovable, the same
Year after year, through all the silent night
Burns on forevermore that quenchless flame,
Shines on that inextinguishable light!
And more than 100 years later the Portland Head Light continues to shine on.

Pocono Raceway, PA, July, 2005. A closeup of Elliott Sadler's #38 M&Ms car waiting to go through inspection in the garage at Pocono. Instead of snapping random photos of all the cars in the garage area I try to do something a little different with some of them because photos of the cars are a dime a dozen on websites all over the 'net. I could probably have spent half a day taking close-ups of various details on all the cars.

Photo of the Day - Lone Lobster Boat

Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2005. Yes, yet another photo from Maine. I only got up for sunrise once while I was in Maine this year but I did go out to take photos in the early morning light just about every morning since the light is best for photography purposes in the early morning as the sun is rising and in the evening at twilight. But you never know exactly what the conditions are going to be like, particularly near the ocean when things can change very quickly. So at first when I was out there that morning it was completely sunny with mostly blue skies. Then the sea fog started rolling in and before too long it was misty all over, but especially just off shore. I thought this one lone lobster boat out setting pots or picking them up looked kind of cool on the still water with nothing but fog in front of it.

Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2005. Why yes I do have a favorite rock on Marginal Way in Ogunquit. And this is a piece of it. Each day for probably hundreds of years the waves have crashed over and around this rock on Marginal Way. The top of the rock is completely flat and it reminds me of a table. Something about it always grabs my attention whether it's the way the waves wash over it or just it's shape.

I had such a great time there - so many neat sculptures and so much to take photos of. I'd really love to go back but I don't think we'll get a chance since it is a bit of a drive until after the wedding. There's a fancy French restaurant there too that it supossedly excellent. Amateur Photographers Risk Lives for Disaster Photos
Disaster Photos: Newsworthy or Irresponsible
When the Air France plane crashed in Toronto on Tuesday, Eddie Ho, a passanger on the plane, happened to have his digital camera in his pocket and as he was escaping he snapped a shot inside of his fellow passengers escaping the plane as well as everyone fleeing the burning wreckage once they were outside. Ho then promptly sold the photos to two news syndicates who resold them to various media outlets including CNN, Good Morning America, and Today. Amateurs taking photos as a disaster unfolds is becoming increasingly more common. The British press used photos from camera phones to show what happened in London during the bombings there on July 7. So the question that some are pondering is if people who stop to take these photos are risking their own lives and that of others and also if the media is encouraging this kind of risky business by broadcasting these images.
Personally as big of a photographer as I am I'm pretty sure if I was on the scene of a disaster I'd be so freaked out that taking photos would be the last thing that I'd be thinking about doing. I'd be worried about my own safety and that of the people I was with. Once I was safe I'd also be thinking about ways that I could help the other people around me. That's not to say that the people who take these photos aren't also concerned with these things - I'm sure that they are. But I also think there are a lot of people who have a sense of invulnerability, even in the face of extreme danger. "It won't happen to me!" they think. Unfortunately, particularly in a volatile situation which a disaster often is, things can go from bad to worse rapidly.
Some feel that the media shouldn't use photos like these from amateurs because it encourages others to put themselves into dangerous situations to get a photo that might be used on the news. I agree that media outlets should be careful not to celebrate people putting their lives at risk to get a photo. But on the other hand a disaster is a newsworthy event that happens without warning. It's rare for a professional photojournalist to be on hand to take photos. So there are times when amateur photos are the only record of the event unfolding and it's immediate aftermath. So in that case the photos are newsworthy and I think there is reason to use them.
And the reality is that camera phones and to a lesser degree digital cameras are touted for how easy it makes it to take it out of a pocket and quickly snap a few shots. Camera phones used to be a novelty but now it seems like everyone has them and pull them out at the drop of a hat. So if people are taking photos constantly of everything around them it seems natural for them to take photos when they find themselves in a disaster. They are just operating on instinct without giving much thought to the potential dangers of what they're doing.

Photo of the Day - Marginal Way at Sunrise

Marginal Way, Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2005. It wasn't as dramatic of a sunrise as last year but I did wake up one morning to take photos at sunrise while I was up in Maine. Actually I think of all the times I've woken up to take photos at sunrise this particular time featured the least impressive sunrise. But I don't think it will be easy to find anything that will compare to some of the photos I took one morning at sunrise last summer during that ultra low-tide. Still, I managed to find plenty of things to take photos of this year!

Photo of the Day - Rocky Shore

York, Maine, July, 2005. The coast of Maine is very rocky in some spots. There is sandy beaches in some parts, including a very nice one in Ogunquit, but there is also lots of rock formations where the water meets the land. And I love to see the waves crashing against the rocks. There weren't particularly impressive waves at any point when we were near the water in Ogunquit but I still loved sitting and watching the waves roll in. This photo was taken near the Nubble Lighthouse.

Photo of the Day - Stairs

Fort McClary, Kittery, Maine, July, 2005. I don't know why but I've always been fascinated by taking photos of stairs. Perhaps it's because they are symmetrical and I like patterns. Or perhaps it's because a good picture of stairs make you wonder where they go or who might have walked on them. So I came across these stone steps at Fort McClary, I couldn't help but take a photo of them.

Photo of the Day - Mike Piazza

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals, July 4, 2005. Jim and I along with his sister and her husband went to the Mets vs. Nationals game yesterday which the Mets ended up winning. We aren't fans of either team but we love baseball and someone had given us his season tickets which were awesome seats! This photo of Mike Piazza wasn't taken from our seats but I took it one of the times I wandered around the stadium taking photos. Unlike at Yankee Stadium where they are very strict about where you can stand, when and how close you can get the field if you don't have tickets for the really expensive seats, the Nationals are much more lax about that kind of thing. So I was able to get pretty close while Piazza was warming up for the game and borrow some seats at various points behind both dugouts during the game to take photos. Though it was hot as anything it was a lot of fun! I just wish that the National's Nick Johnson, a former Yankee, hadn't been on the disabled list because it would have been great to see him play.

Photo of the Day - Flower

I think this was taken at Hofstra as a lot of my photos of flower are. It was taken back in 2001 with my first digital camera which explains the graininess of the photo since it was probably only a 2MP camera.

Olympus Digital Fisheye Lens
To Be Available in January 2006
Now here's something I'd like - a fisheye lens for my digital camera. Actually I'd like a semi-fish eye lens like I have for my 35mm film camera. It has the curve but not the full circle, 180 view like the full fisheye lens does. The problem is with digital cameras the wide-angle, semi-fish eye and fisheye lenses are even more expensive than they are for film cameras. It makes for some really cool photos though. I have some cool photos that I took in Manhattan one day with the semi-fish eye lens that I really like only I haven't gotten around to scanning them yet and now they're packed up in a box somewhere in advance of my upcoming move. Otherwise I'd throw one up here. Maybe I'll come across them at some point.

More Paparazzi Than Ever
Big Demand for Celebrity Photos
This article doesn't really cover anything that isn't already known - parparazzi will go to any lengths to get the photos they want, there is a huge demand for celebrity photos, celebrities claim to hate the paparazzi but many acknowledge and understand that without their photos they would get far less publicity and attention. But what's interesting is that in light of the recent incident in which Lindsey Lohan's car was rammed by a member of the paparazzi who wanted a photo of her, the LAPD is conducting an investigation into whether some members of the paparazzi in Los Angeles conspire to provoke stars so that they can photograph them in distress. To achieve the goal of getting those photos some paparazzi will engage in stalker-like or possibly illegial behavior which would get a non-photographer arrested.
Because the public loves negative photos of celebrities it's brought more and more paparazzi to Los Angeles - why would anyone be interested in photos showing happy people? Or couples who are happily married rather than celebrities who are cheating on each other - boring! Why yes, that's sarcasm. I think the boom in paparazzi-type photos is a sad commentary on society. Yes, there was interest in photos like that since day one that the first movie star was created. And there's nothing wrong with enjoying photos of celebrities. But I think there's something disturbing about the rabid demand for photos of stars in unguarded, private and personal moments, particularly those that attempt to portray them accurately or not in a negative light. There's no harm in candid shots of celebrities at public events but a lot of these photos come from stalking the celebrities at their houses, on vacation or at family events like weddings. I just don't get the obession with who Brad Pitt might be with now that he's separated from Jennifer Aniston or seeing photos of Lindsey Lohan crying. Why do people need to know that kind of information or see photos that infringe on someone's private life?

Photo of the Day - Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada, January, 2005. Just a random photo of The Stratosphere taken from the car as we were driving away on our first day in Las Vegas. We went up to the top of The Stratosphere and had lunch in the revolving restuarant up there, then went to the observation deck outside. There really are some incredible views up there! I just wish it had been a sunny day.
But I post this as a way for me to mention that since I've been blogging about so many Las Vegas related topics and posting so many photos from my trip that I created a Las Vegas category in case anyone is interested in reading everything that I've said on that topic, much like I have categories for Michael Waltrip, Steve Park, Photography, etc... I also created a category for Maine since I post a bunch about that beautiful state as well.

Photo of the Day - Paulinskill Viaduct

Paulinskill Viaduct, New Jersey, April, 2005. Usually each spring I take a ride out to the Paulinskill Viaduct but this year I didn't get out there. Which is a shame because there's more and more talk that an active train line is going to be put in across the viaduct which means that access to it will surely be restricted. That's very unfortunate because as I've noted before it is a very cool place. I'm not sure we'll get there in the summer due to the bugs and how overgrown it probably gets underneath but hopefully we can visit in the Fall. I'm sure we'll always be able to walk around underneath but it would be cool to be able to get up top at least one more time.

Kodak To Stop Making Black and White Photo Paper
Ilford, Other Companies Will Still Sell It
In another sign that digital photography is rapidly making film photography obsolete, Kodak, the world's largest film manufacturer, has announced that they will stop production of black and white photo paper, though they will continue to make black and white film and processing chemicals. The reason being is that as more people move to digital ways of taking photos they are less and less likely to use traditional film cameras, therefore even less likely to be developing and printing their own black and white photos. Kodak as a whole has had to make quite a few adjustments to the digital revolution since their entire business was based on film. So they have turned their attention to the digital market with digital cameras, inkjet paper, photo kiosks and online photo finishing, x-ray machines, etc... Though Kodak will no longer be producing black and white photo paper, several other companies will still make it including Ilford, though they've had financial difficulties as of late.
I learned photography by taking black and white photos and then developing the film and printing the photos myself at the photo lab in my high school. I still have a lot of those prints. So I have always had a fondness for black and white photography. While there will always be black and white photography as it is still very popular with digital photographers, there is something about controlling every aspect of the photography process manually, by hand, from taking the photos to developing the film to making the prints that is really satisfying. Of course these days the ease of digital photography appeals to most photographers. There's no doubt that traditional black and white photography that involves printing one's own photos is a time-consuming process. But it is a unique one and I'm glad that I got to experience it all those years ago.

I wonder if one day Kasey will be more popular than Junior? If I had a magic eight ball to consult I suspect it would say "All signs point to yes." As whether I'll ever know the answers to some of my other burning questions I'd say the eight ball says "outlook not so good."

Dallas Cowboys Use Photo Without Permission
Will Pay $250,000 To Settle Lawsuit
Back in 2000 Walter Smith of Impact Images took a photo of the Dallas Cowboys' Emmitt Smith which he gave to the Cowboys to potentially use on season tickets the following year. Another design was ultimately used but the Cowboys bought 250 copies of Smith's photo to sell to fans. End of story? Not so fast. Smith (the photographer) discovered, at the Cowboy's booth at the Texas State Fair, that without permission the Cowboys had been using his image on t-shirts, sweatshirts and other memorabilia. So naturally he took them to court as he should.
The terms of the settlement are that the Cowboys must pay Smith $250,000 and agree not to use the photo again. However, there is also a clause in the settlement that Smith is not allowed to ever take photos at a Cowboys game again. I don't understand that. Maybe there are some pieces to the puzzle that are missing but it seems to me that the Cowboys are the ones who screwed up, not Smith. So why should he be barred from taking photos at Cowboy games? Smith was simply going about his business as a sports photographer. And protecting his rights as such when it became evident that the Cowboys had used his image without permission and in a pretty major way. If they don't want to run into trouble with Smith again they simply don't use his images without permission again.

Photo of the Day - Stony Point Lighthouse

Stony Point Lighthouse, Stony Point, New York, June, 2005. Yesterday Jim and I took a ride up Route 9W along the west side of the Hudson River. Periodically we'll just take rides to areas that's we've wanted to check out just to see what we come across. So we came across the Stony Point Battlefield and Lighthouse overlooking the Hudson River. The lighthouse sits on a peninsula that was the site of a battle during the revolutionary war on July 15-16, 1779. Now it's a historic site with awesome views of the Hudson River. It's almost hard to believe that one is looking at a river, the Hudson is so immense. I suspect the battlefield doesn't get many visitors and it was pretty quiet when we were there with only a few other people. Which was cool because we were able to hear all sorts of sounds from the river and also from the wildlife in the woods. A very nice place to visit for a little while.

Photo of the Day - Rio

Las Vegas, Nevada, January, 2005. A shot of the Rio Hotel and Casino at night. I might have posted this one I'm not sure. But I was thinking about how awesome the view is from the top of the Rio. There's a cool bar up there with some very yummy exotic drinks. Apparently the Rio is an all-suites hotel so I wouldn't mind staying there in a future visit to Las Vegas. It was really hard to take a photo that does justice to how cool the neon that lights the Rio up looks at night.

Photo of the Day - Radley

Radley. May, 2005. A couple of weeks ago Jim and I dog-sat for his sister's dogs, Radley and Emma, overnight. They are both Norweigan Buhunds, a breed known for being affectionate and intelligent. Which these two most certainly are. There were times when I had three dogs vieing for my attention all at the same time (Radley, Emma and Bailey). Which didn't always go over so well with Bailey since he thinks he should be the only one I lavish attention on. But for the most part it worked out well other than the incident with the blinds and the futon cover. But it's always fun to have extra fur-friends around!

Photo of the Day - Bailey

Bailey the Pug. May, 2005. Poor Bailey. His back is acting up again. It's a vicious circle. He has to eat a different kind of food due to his kidney problems and that is making him gain weight. Which is bad for his back and makes it hurt. So we took him for a walk for some excercise which he loved but that seems to have also make his back hurty. So it seems like we/he just can't win. Hopefully when Jim takes him to the vet this week she'll have some suggestions for us as to what we can do.

Yahoo Testing New PhotoMail Service
Allows Multiple Photos to Be Inserted Directly Into Emails
This sounds like something that could be interesting. Yahoo is testing an email service which will allow users to insert as many as 300 photos into the body of an email as thumbnails. The recipient would then click on the thumbnails for full-sized versions of the photos. The service would also allow users to store an unlimited amount of photos on Yahoo's servers. In addition, users could do things like put photos in borders and rotate them. This is all significant because usually email services require mulitiple photos to be sent as attachments and also limit how big the file size of the photos being sent are. But they won't have to place many limits because all that will be in the email are the thumbnails and the full-size images will be served from the Yahoo servers rather than actually be contained in the email itself.
The only problem with PhotoMail that I can anticipate is that already the Yahoo photo galleries that people upload photos to can be extremely slow to use even on a high-speed connection. So if that is also the case with PhotoMail, I'm not sure how well it's going to work because it will just be too difficult to get to the full-sized photos. I can only imagine how long it might take for emails containing 300 thumbnails to be delivered too. But this does sound like a potentially useful service if Yahoo can ensure that their servers can handle it.

Photo of the Day - The Road Not Taken

New Jersey Botanical Gardens, Ringwood, New Jersey, May, 2005. It's a path not a road but it reminded me of my favorite Robert Frost poems which happens to be one of my favorite poems of all time.
The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
I always seemed to have taken the road less traveled and that indeed has made a difference.

Kevin Griffin Photography
I came across the photography of Kevin Griffin this weekend and was pretty impressed. Some of what he takes are black and white, extreme close-ups of waves which given my love of the ocean and wave photography really caught my attention. I've seen Griffin's style of photography before as it relates to waves and it makes for some pretty cool photos. Most people wouldn't think to do black and white photography when it comes to waves but it actually makes for some really dramatic shots.
I would like to link to Griffin's website but in good conscience I can't because while his photography is awesome his website isn't as good. It's hard to navigate and it's dependant on the use of a pop-up which isn't a good thing since most people have pop-ups disabled these days. I found it very difficult to get to the galleries which also isn't a good thing considering his images are the whole reason he has a website in the first place. So I can't send any readers of this site over there because I don't want to frustrate anyone like I got frustrated. Or maybe I was just website-challenged on my multiple visits to try and see the photos he had there.

Photo of the Day - Frog

May 21, 2005. New Jersey Botanical Gardens, Ringwood, New Jersey. Yesterday Jim and I took a ride to the New Jersey Botanical Gardens. We had been there once before and I was in the mood to take some photos so that was what we thought of that wasn't too far from where we were. At first it was pretty cloudy and that didn't make for optimum photo ops. But the longer we were there the sunnier it got so I was able to get some decent flower shots as well as some cool shots when we walked a little ways down a path into the woods.
This photo of a frog we came across is one that I took in the woods. Not that it's an amazing photo or anything but I put it up because I don't think I had ever come across a frog (or is that a toad?) that big in the wild before. There are surely much bigger frogs hopping around but the only ones I've seen in their natural habitat were pretty tiny. This frog wasn't alone either. We saw at least three other sizable frogs nearby. There may have been more but we might not have seen them since even these frogs were pretty well camouflaged.
We had been to the NJBG once before and there are some nice areas that we saw, and given that there are 96 arces there surely lots of pretty parts that we haven't seen. However, I haven't enjoyed my two visits to the NJBG as much as visits to other botanical gardens. The reason being that it always seems a little wornout and not taken care of. Plus, both of the times that we've visited the flowers have seemed somewhat sparce even though it's been at times where there should be plenty blooming. I guess the reason is that because these are state run gardens they don't have the budget for upkeep or planting as some gardens have. It's a nice place to take a walk but it's probably not worth a long drive out of the way to get to.

Photo of the Day - Ogunquit Flowers

Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2004. There's a hotel right by Marginal Way in Oqunquit where there is always beautiful flower plantings right along the fence which separates the hotel property from Marginal Way. I believe the hotel is Anchorage by the Sea. A number of months ago there was an article in Maine Magazine about these plantings and it's actually pretty impressive how much time and work goes into maintaining them. I wish I could remember more of the details but I seem to remember that whoever plants them either doesn't get paid a lot or might not even be paid at all even though it's almost a daily job in the summer months. But it was an interesting article that I should try to see if I can find online somewhere.

No New 35mm Camera Models?
Someday there will no longer be any 35mm cameras made. Some may find that ridiculous considering how many people still use 35mm film cameras, even in spite of the digital revolution. But I was reading today in Shutterbug that at the latest PMA (Photo Marketing Association) show in Orlando, for the first time there were no new 35mm camera models announced. That is a sure sign that 35mm cameras are beginning to be phased out.
I don't use my 35mm camera much anymore. I'd use it if I wanted to use one of my specialty lenses that I can't use on my digital camera like my semi-fish eye lens. But otherwise, I find the photos I take with my digital camera are just as good as the ones I can take with my 35mm camera. And I can almost instantly see the results rather than having to wait to get the photos developed at a photo lab. Considering my constant battles with all the area photo labs, most of whom did a lousy job developing film and printing my photos, I'm really happy that I can just download the photos to my computer, in essence "developing" them myself.
In somewhat related news I'm getting the urge to get a new lens for my digital camera. One of the lens companies came out with a wide-angle lens made specifically for digital cameras and I might look into getting it if it's not too pricey.

newenglandruins.com
I find abandoned places to be absolutely fascinating. It's always intriguing to me what might have happened in those places and how they came to be abandoned. I'm not alone in my fascination for abandoned places and ruins as there are quite a few people who enjoy urban exploration which is basically exploring abandoned factories, mental asylums, houses and other structures. Often, to explore these places it involves trespassing so this isn't an activity that is encouraged but there are quite a few websites devoted to this practice.
What I enjoy most of all is seeing photography of abandoned places. So I was very happy when Preservation Magazine did an article on urban exploration and featured some photography by Rob Dobi, who is based in Connecticut, and explores abandoned places in New England. His website, newenglandruins.com is full of absolutely amazing photos that Dobi has taken in the abandoned places that he's visited. He really has quite an eye for capturing some truly haunting and memorable shots.

A Truly Amazing Photographer: David Muench
In all this time that I've had this blog it occured to me that I've never discussed my favorite photographer. That would be landscape photographer David Muench. For more than 40 years Muench has been creating incredible photographs of the natural world. He has been the primary photographer for countless books and has also had his photographs featured in many magazines and exhibitions. His son Marc, also takes outstanding photographs in a very similar style as his father does so they often collaborate on projects together.
Many of the subjects that Muench photographs are things that I find fascinating such as landscapes that somehow feature water or rock formations. Over the weekend I picked up a whole book on natural stone arches that features his photography. I've always been fascinated by arches and I hope to one day visit Arches National Park. So to see a whole book filled of all sorts of arches from the kind at Arches National Park to sea arches, featuring Muench's photography was really exciting to me. Though I haven't gotten to look at it in-depth just quite yet, what I have seen of it I love! It makes me want to hop on a plane right now and go to some of the places that Muench featured in this book.
Muench has said that he tries to capture the spirit of the land and he is successful. I can't imagine how long he and his son have to stake out various spots waiting for the light to be exactly right to capture their images. But the waiting is well-worth it as the photos that they take really show the wildness and natural beauty of the land. He has also said that he hopes that his photos will make people aware of the importance of perserving these places. Well, I can't imagine anyone looking at his work and not wanting to keep these beautiful images intact.
I'm in no way, shape, or form anywhere close to the photographer that either Muench is. But I would say that their work is an influence on my photography. I can particularly see it in some photos I took last summer in Ogunquit at sunrise when the tide was out and also in some of the shots I took in January at Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire State Park. Hopefully, this summer I will have more opportunities to take photos in some beautiful locations.

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY, May, 2005. So today I took some tulip photos. It used to be that I would spend a lot of time taking photos on campus, walking around after work and going back on weekends. But as time has gone on I've spent less and less time doing that as the way they've planted the tulips has changed. I took some shots today but I don't think I'll be taking any more this season. A bit too much sunlight in this shot but I kind of like it anyway.

As one might imagine outside of a ride called Journey Into Imagination it's very creative. There is one part of the fountain in which water jumps from place to place. It's hard to describe, or capture on film, but it's pretty cool. All of the fountains at Epcot are actually really neat.

Photo of the Day - Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park, January, 2005. I'd really love to do the helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon again and also visit the Grand Canyon more extensively. It's funny how much I loved that helicopter ride considering I don't enjoy thrill rides. But it was so cool to see all the sights from above. And of course seeing the Grand Canyon was awesome. I just wish I had gotten to see more of it. With a wide-angle lens would be good too!
Those people in this photo are a couple from Germany I think it was who were on the helicopter with us. It's amazing how tiny they look in comparison to the huge walls of the canyon. It really is incredible how immense the canyon is!

Photo of the Day - Another From My Grandparent's

March, 2005. Today was the unveiling of the headstone at my Grandparents grave at the cemetary in Staten Island. So it seems appropriate to make the photo of the day another shot of the distinctive lamp that was in their house.

Photo of the Day - Maine

York, Maine. July, 2004. Figured one from Maine would be appropriate as a photo of the day since I was thinking about Maine after reading the article from the previous entry. This was taken by the Nubble Lighthouse and no, that's not Jim and I sitting on the rocks. I just thought it made for a better photo to have those two in the photo. Now that it's starting to get a little warm I wish I was up in Maine!

Photo of the Day - Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada. January, 2005. This isn't actually what I wanted to post as a photo of the day but since I've never been to Arches National Park this will have to do as the stone of the formations at Valley of Fire is similar to those of some of the arches at Arches National Park. I've seen some photos from Arches National Park over the past few weeks which I've absolutely loved and it's just really made me want to go there even more than previously. Which was a lot to begin with!
I might have mentioned in a previous entry on Valley of Fire but the red of those formations is caused by iron levels in the stone.

Photo of the Day - Rose

Elizabeth Park, West Hartford, CT. June, 2002. I can't remember posting any flower photos lately but now that Spring is here it seems appropriate. It was a beautiful day today, on the warm side for a change so blooming flowers can't be far behind! Hopefully, I'll be getting to take some rose photos this year once they start coming up.

Photo of the Day - Mountains

On the way back from the Grand Canyons, somewhere in Nevada, January, 2005. I don't think I uploaded this one before. I guess to people who live in mountainous areas this isn't anything too special but to me who has never seen mountain views up close, I was amazed by everything I saw as I looked out the window of the helicopter on the way to and the way back from the Grand Canyon. I'd love to see even bigger mountains that I did in the Las Vegas area!

Photo of the Day - From Grandma's House

So yesterday Jim and I stopped by my grandmother's house to take a few things to remember her and my grandfather by since they both passed away about a year ago. The house just sold a couple of weeks ago so it will be completely cleared out very soon. I took a few things including her rocking chair, a stained glass box (that I can't help but think that my Mom and I once gave her as a present but I don't quite remember) and a pocket watch and selective service card from 1944 that was my grandfather's. I was tempted to also take this wacky lamp, a part of which is pictured here, but it's huge and it would just sit in storage somewhere. It's just that was a very distinctive thing in her house.

Barry Zito the Photographer
Oakland A's pitcher Barry Zito is also a photographer and he shot a series of photos for Sports Illustrated during Spring Training. I thought his photos were really interesting. The best was the second one of one of his teammates powdering himself before a game - just a funny shot but also one that speaks to the realities of some of the preparations that the players go through to get ready for a game. I also liked the shot that Zito took as he was signing autographs for fans. He wrote captions for each of the photos and for that one he talked about how it can be overwhelming sometimes to be surrounded by all those fans. That photo definitely shows why that might be. All the photos are great though and really show a bit of spring training that fans don't often see.
I've always been fascinated with the idea of what athletes might take pictures of if they were given cameras. Photos always give a peek into someone's world and with the athletes it would be no different. Kodak is a sponsor in Nascar and I'd love to see them distribute cameras to drivers, crew members, owners and Nascar officials for a week to see what everyone would take photos of. Some people might take pictures of their families, some might take photos of their pets, some beautiful women or attrative men, some might capture the events around them. I think it would be really interesting and I wish I knew someone who I could pitch the idea to because I'd also love to work on that project and turn it into a book. It would be interesting to do it with baseball too, perhaps give a bunch of Yankees cameras and see what they might come up with. Zito certainly came up with some really good shots.

Photo of the Day - Ogunquit Buoy

Lone Buoy, Off the Ogunquit, Maine coast. I took a bunch of photos like this on our boat ride from Perkins Cove to the Nubble Lighthouse. Each lobster fisherman is assigned a different unique color scheme which is registered with the state. They also each have particular areas where they can set their traps and they are extremely territorial. Apparently it's not unusual for there to be incidents between lobstermen who think that someone is encroaching on their territory.

Photo of the Day - Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada. January, 2005. The cool thing about Valley of Fire State Park is how all the rock formations were so unique. Erosion has shaped them in so many different ways. I think I could spend days there photographing. And the same rock formation would look completely different from all different angles and at different times of day as the light changes. Also different seasons would bring some interesting changes. It probably doesn't snow there often but if it ever does that might make for really cool shots. After a rain storm would make for different photos than when it hadn't rained for a long time. And so on and so on. I just wish I actually lived near there so I could go and take photos in all these different scenarios.

Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Waves crashing onto the shore in Ocean Grove. I haven't been back since I went to Ocean Grove with Jim and his family a few years ago but it was really nice in Ocean Grove. We had a good time just relaxing and hanging out at the inn but I also really enjoyed taking pictures on the beach there. Maybe someday we'll go back.

Photo of the Day - Perkins Cove

Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine. July, 2004. Well, I came across two batches of photos from Ogunquit from last summer. So now I have a new group of photos to use for photo of the day that I had pretty much forgotten about. This is a shot of the harbor in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. Perkins Cove is a small little village that is part of Ogunquit that has all sorts of restaurants and stores. One end of Marginal Way ends in Perkins Cove too. All the boat tours in Ogunquit also leave from Perkins Cove.

Photo of the Day - Ogunquit

Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2004. I think I posted at least one other photo a while back that I took this particular morning in Ogunquit. I woke up at sunrise to take pictures and I found that it was an extreme low tide so the water had gone quite a ways out. The patterns in the sand that the water had left as it retreated were fascinating, particularly as the light from the rising sun shone on it. So I took a bunch of photos. Perhaps I will make this week's theme for Photo of the Day photos that I took that morning.

Photo of the Day - David Cone

October, 2000. American League Division Series. David Cone walking in before the game. The problem with all these hearings on steroids is that it really makes you wonder, even more than previously, which players are using performance enhancers. I'm quite sure there are plenty of Yankees who are or once did use performance enhancers. Cone is now retired but he was once my favorite baseball player. As a pitcher it's less likely that he used steroids than a hitter, but you almost have to suspect everyone after hearing all the talk about performance enhancers.

Nubble Lighthouse, York, Maine. I really, really, really want to go back to Maine. I don't know if it will be possible this summer but it's just so beautiful there. Longwood Gardens, PA, 2001. I thought these flowers were neat when I was photographing them because they reminded me of flames. I didn't have all that much time when I was taking shots at that point but I would have liked to have taken a few more shots of these flowers to see if I could have gotten them any more abstract and flame-like by taking shots from various perspectives.

Photo of the Day - Michael Waltrip

Las Vegas, NV. January, 2005. Here's Michael Waltrip at a signing in conjunction with Operation Marathon. With the races in Las Vegas this weekend and word that Michael is going to present Kyle Petty with a check for the money he raised for the Victory Junction Gang Camp through all the events for Operation Marathon it seemed appropriate to make Michael the photo of the day. I'm hoping that a photo or some video of Michael presenting the check will show up somewhere.
I can only imagine what kind of hijinx the drivers and their crews are getting into in Vegas. Probably some late nights and lots of partying and gambling. Not to mention some good eats. I've heard that Hootie and the Blowfish will be performing and/or appearing at the Silverton Casino as part of the grand opening for the lounge named after them but details seem pretty sketchy about it, in spite of that online flyer I saw. But if they actually will be at the Silverton this weekend I would guess that Michael will probably also be there. Just guessing that Hootie and co. will be at the race on Sunday, maybe even Saturday too if they really are in LV this weekend.
I'm hoping lady luck will shine on Michael this weekend and that he'll get a great finish in the race on Sunday.

Wirelessly Transmitting Photos as They Are Shot
Canon has come out with a wireless file transmitter that apparently allows photographers to transmit photos either locally to a laptop or other computer or over longer distances via the internet. I'm not sure of all the technical details which can be found in the article above but this sounds like something that could be really useful for sports photographers and other photojournalists working on tight deadlines. Instead of having to run cards back to photo rooms at events to be downloaded and sent, if I'm understanding correctly, images can be send directly from the camera to the photo room as they're shot or even over the internet back to editors at the photographer's home publication. I'm sometimes already amazed by how fast images from games and events show up, it appears that it could get even faster with this device.

Photo of the Day - Cape Porpoise

Cape Porpoise, Maine, July 3, 2004. Another place that I would love to go back to. Cape Porpoise is a tiny fishing village just outside of Kennebunkport in Maine. There's a great restaurant right on the dock that Jim, me and his mother went to when we were there. Definitely a very awesome meal. There was an extreme low tide when we were there and the waitress told us that she had never seen the tide be so low or so high when it came back in. It was quite a sight to see though it's not apparent in this photo. But overall Cape Porpoise is a very relaxing place to be because it's so quiet. I think that most tourists pass it right over in their haste to explore Kennebunkport which is fine by me, and I'm sure for those that live there, because it means that it will stay quiet.

Photo of the Day - Bernie Williams

Press Gate, August 8, 2002. Yankee Stadium. I post this photo of Bernie Williams that I took three years ago after a game against the Kansas City Royals because I just got to thinking about how I hadn't heard much from Spring Training about Bernie. He's definitely nearing the end of his career and as such his numbers are in a decline. It's sad to think about Bernie not being in pinstripes considering how much a key part of some great Yankees teams he's been. But Bernie is not done yet and I'm curious as to what kind of season he's going to have this year. While Bernie has never been one of my favorites like Tino or Mussina, I've always liked him and I'd like to see him be a solid contributor for the Yankees in 2005.

Photo of the Day - Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, January, 2005. I wish I was back in Las Vegas! I've been hearing a lot of talk about Las Vegas the past week or so because Nascar comes to Las Vegas this weekend. Already some of the drivers are there going out and partying. If I were there aside from pigging out in all the yummy restaurants and going to any Nascar related events, I'd go spend lots of time in Valley of Fire State Park taking photos of all these neat-o rock formations. I'd like to either go there at sunrise or be there for sunset when the light would probably make these formations look even cooler.

Newsweek Uses Fake Martha Stewart "Photo" on Cover
What is Newsweek thinking? It's one thing to touch up a photo in Photoshop but the use of photo illustrations which are basically fake photos needs to be done only when extremely necessary and should always be labeled clearly so as not to confuse readers. However, Newsweek decided that with Martha Stewart not being available for a photo shoot for obvious reasons, they would fake a photo shoot. So they took Martha's head and stuck it on the body of a model that they used on the front cover with the headline, "Martha's Last Laugh." There is nothing on the cover to indicate that this is a photo illustration not a real photo and I'm quite sure that many readers will think that somehow Martha got out to do a photo shoot.
A news organization has a responsibility not to mislead their audience. And it seems to me that is exactly what Newsweek did here.

Photo of the Day - Cool Clouds

Clouds over Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, NV. January, 2005. Sunny, cloudy, sunny, cloudy, rainy, sunny. The weather just couldn't make up it's mind when we were in Red Rock Canyon. I wish it had been sunny the whole time, especially since it was a little chilly when it was cloudy, but the mixed conditions meant that I could take this shot of the clouds at one point. The clouds seem so swirly and my eye was drawn to the sky to take this photo.

Photo of the Day - Yellow Tulips

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY, May, 2004. It's been a while since I've used a flower photo as the Photo of the Day. In fact it's been so long that I can't remember if I ever used this one before or not! I really should keep track somewhere of which photos I put up here. In any event, looking at this photo of some tulips at Hofstra really makes me think of spring, which isn't too far away. Too bad we have a big snowstorm to get through first which is due to hit this area tomorrow afternoon and last through Tuesday morning. I can't wait until we're done with the snow and some flowers start making their appearance!

Photo of the Day - Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam. January, 2005. Here's a view of the Hoover Dam from above, taken from the helicopter on our way to the Grand Canyon. It was really tough to get any shots of the Hoover Dam because as soon I composed the shot and focused, the helicopter was changing direction. It was really cool to see it from above after we had visited and walked on it a couple of days earlier.
The tan ring that is visible over the water marks how low the water level in Lake Mead has dropped.

Photos From Recovered Digital Camera Show Tsunami
The camera belonging to a Canadian couple who perished in the tsunami in Thailand was found recently and somehow while the camera was ruined the memory stick inside was not destroyed. On that memory stick was photos that the couple had taken which show the water receeding just prior to the tsunami hitting and then the wave itself actually crashing to shore. It's pretty incredible to see the series of shots, how calm the water seems and then suddenly it's churning as angry, brown waves crash to shore.
Their son doesn't know why they stood there taking pictures and didn't run. My guess is that perhaps they didn't know the danger of what was going on. If one doesn't know that water rushing out is a sign of a possible tsunami strike they might have just thought it was some sort of some crazy natural phenomenon that was common to the area. And then once the waves started coming in they might not have realized just how powerful they were. But it's pretty sad to think that one minute they were standing there in the sun taking photos and the next they had been swept away.
But it is an interesting series of photos to see in spite of the tragic backstory that goes with them.

Megapixel Myths
Don't Need All Those Extra Megapixels
The Photo Marketing Association International Trade Show is this week in Orlando, Florida and it's where all the camera manufacturers and associated companies announce many of their new products. I would definitely love to go to that show! At any rate, one of the trends that is apparent is that many companies are announcing five, six and seven megapixel consumer cameras. The thing is do consumers really need the extra megapixels and will they notice a difference in the photos they take?
In most case the answer is no. Yes, there is a difference between a photo taken with a one or two megapixel camera and one taken with a seven megapixel camera. But there's not going to be much noticable difference in image quality between a four megapixel camera and a five or a six megapixel camera. The only advantage with more megapixels is that it's possible to print larger and larger prints but most people aren't printing photos larger than a 4x6 or 5x7. Another plus about camera with more megapixels is also the ability to blow up sections of photos to print but again I would suspect that there aren't that many people who routinely do stuff like that. So really consumers could save themselves some money by buying an older four megapixel camera instead of getting a new five, six or seven megapixel camera unless there are other improved features on the new models.

Photo of the Day - Camden Harbor

Camden, Maine, 2002. Camden, Maine has a very well-known harbor which as one might imagine is the center of virtually everything in town. There are lots of great restaurants around the harbor area and a bunch of neat stores too. Many boats of all shapes and sizes, from all over the place make stops in Camden as one can tell from the photo. When I was up in Camden with my parents we took a ride on a sail boat our of the Camden harbor and up the coast which was fun and very relaxing. It's very cold here right now and I'm sure it's even colder up in Maine but looking at this photo of Camden in the summer makes me feel just a bit warmer.
One neat thing, at least to me, is that there is a webcam of the Camden harbor that I find interesting to take a peek at periodically. It can be found here: http://www.villagesoup.com/webcams/CamdenHarborCam.cfm. Probably not much going on in the Winter though!

Photo of the Day - Michael Waltrip

Dover Int'l Raceway, Dover, Del. September, 2004. In honor of Michael Waltrip's win today, which I am still giddy about, I'm going to post my favorite photo of Michael that I took at Dover. For those who might be reading this and have no idea what I'm talking about, I won an auction to raise money for Michael's Operation Marathon charity drive which supports the Victory Junction Gang Camp, a camp for terminally and chronically ill children. So Jim and I got to be Michael's guest at a race and we got to see and do all sorts of awesome things. Riding around the track in a truck with Michael during the pre-race, when I took this photos, was a definite highlight for sure!
I doubt I'll ever be lucky enough to do anything like this again but it was definitely one of the coolest experiences that I've ever had! Seeing what happens on race day was so interesting and every single person we met was incredibly nice. Just a fun, fun day. And another time when I had a great time taking lots and lots of photos!

Photo of the Day - Desert and Mountains

On the road to Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, NV. I made Jim pull over so I could take a couple of photos as we approached Red Rock Canyon. I was just so amazed by everything I was seeing that I had to take some pictures. There just aren't any views like that in New York or New Jersey!
All those clouds came rolling in gradually as we made our way to Red Rock Canyon and then as we drove through. It made for some interesting pictures. At times the clouds just swallowed up the mountains. But when it was sunny that bi-colored mountain just looked so cool!
All this time I've been saying that I had never been in the desert before yet I completely forgot that I was in Israel and was very definitely in the desert there. It was so long ago, when I was in high school, that it's easy to forget. Everything was so rushed on that trip too so it was hard to take a lot of things in. Oh, how I wish I had a good camera when I was there!

Photo of the Day - Disney Balloons

Walt Disney World, Florida. 1998. I feel like I might have posted this one once before but it's hard to remember. So if I don't remember it most likely no one else will either. And I figure I better post something other than Las Vegas photos once in a while otherwise it'll get boring!
In any event, one thing that has always caught my eye at Walt Disney World are the large groups of balloons that some cast members walk around with. Naturally they try to sell them to any and all but I've always thought those massive groups of balloons were pretty neat to look at. I guess I like the repeatative patterns they form, as my eye is always attracted to patterns. But what really got me in this photos is the way those two balloons are "looking" at each other.

Photographers Upset With NFL Over Super Bowl Arrests
I meant to blog about this sooner but it got lost in the shuffle. At the Super Bowl two respected sports photographers, Mike Seger of Reuters and Robert Seale of The Sporting News, were arrested for being on the field after the game when they weren't supossed to be. At the last minute, literally, the NFL changed their policies about what photographers could be on the field for the post-game celebrations. For years the photographers working the sidelines had been allowed on the field to take photos of the players celebrating or walking away in dejection but just a few minutes before the game ended an annoucement was made that the NFL was no longer going to allow that. While I understand that the NFL wants to cut down on the number of extra people running around on the field after the game and getting in the way, the photographers have a job to do too and taking pictures of the post game celebration is part of it. Arresting photographers on the field seems a little extreme, especially since the rule change was announced only at the last minute.
What gets me is that while NFL security was having working photographers for major publications and organizations arrested, there were apparently any number of people sneaking into the Super Bowl who had no reason to be there other than to say that they beat security. There were two guys who forged press passes to get in and this guy who pretty much makes a hobby of sneaking into all sorts of sporting and entertainment events. Not just into the stadiums but onto the field or into the locker rooms. There is almost no way that security at any event will be 100% perfect but perhaps the NFL might want to take a look at cutting down on those people who are sneaking into the Superbowl rather than arresting people who belong there and are just doing their jobs.

Nice Photo of Michael Waltrip

I'm not sure what it is but something about this photo of Michael that was taken during practice on Saturday really grabbed me. Maybe it's how the photographer framed his face, the use of the white space on the right or the look on Michael's face but something about it is really effective. Looks like something someone might use for an ad or a website. The photographer is Eric Gilbert but I can't say I've seen any of his shots previously, though maybe I have and just not realized it.

Photo of the Day - Cape May Lighthouse

Cape May, New Jersey, 2001. Just to break up all the Las Vegas photos, here's one of the Cape May Lighthouse. I remember climbing up there and since it was a hot day it was quite some walk up all those stairs. But it was a very nice view from the top and I'd like to go up there again. It would just have to be on a cooler day for sure!
The Cape May Lighthouse is one that had to be moved from it's original location due to erosion problems. And it's a good thing that was done as that spot is now under water.

From what we could tell it looked like there were a lot of great restaurants there including a few nice French ones. We also went up to the top of the Effiel Tower there at night and the view was amazing!

Photo of the Day - John Olerud

Yankees vs. A's, August, 2004. Jason Giambi surfacing for his press conference today is a reminder that spring training is right around the corner. Some players have already started showing up for early workouts. So in honor of the closeness of spring training here's a photo of former Yankees first baseman John Olerud from a game this past summer. Due to injury there hasn't been any interest in Olerud this off-season but hopefully he will fully recover and hook on somewhere. He's a good guy and it would be nice to see him play another year or two and then go out on his own terms.

Jon Mozo
Jon Mozo was a very talented photographer, who took amazing photos of waves and surfing. I was over at sportsshooter.com, a site for professional sports photograhers and on the message board there was a thread about him because he died today. It appears that he was caught by a wave while he was taking photos in Hawaii and drowned. His photography is just amazing and it's exactly the type of wave photos that I love. He truly was able to capture the power and beauty of the waves that he photographed.

Photo of the Day - Cactus

Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. January, 2005. When I was down in Las Vegas I was all excited to see cactus growing in the wild for the first time. Now I'm sure to some that's a silly thing to get excited about but we just don't have cactus up here in the Northeast outside of pots. So I took a few photos of some of the cactus I saw. Meanwhile to those who live in areas where cactus are common they are probably just big prickly weeds to them.

Photo of the Day - Hoover Dam Statue

Hoover Dam, January 2005. This statue is one of two on top of the Hooover Dam. Apparently there is a belief by some that if one rubs the toes of one of these statues that it will bring good luck. Perhaps I should have tried it! I was more concerned with keeping moving so I wouldn't get too wet in the rain!

Photo of the Day - From Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, January, 2005. This is one of the rock formations I was especially fond of in VoF State Park. It's like a mini arch and it was pretty neat looking though this photos doesn't really do it justice. Unfortunately I saw it when we were short on time and couldn't spend too much time taking photos of it because we had to leave for the long drive back to Vegas. There aren't arches in VoF State Park like there are in Arches National Park but there are a few smaller ones and they are neat to see. It's pretty cool the way erosion has worked it magic on the rocks in VoF.

Photo of the Day - Over Lake Mead

Lake Mead from the air. Jan, 2005. So as one might imagine a lot of the photos of the day for a while are going to be shots from our Las Vegas trip. I'll throw some other stuff in there to mix it up but I got to take a lot of photos that excited me so I'll be putting some up here in the blog.
This one was taken from the helicopter on the way to the Grand Canyon. It's of Lake Mead which is huge! I knew it was huge and it looked huge when we were at the Hoover Dam but from the air one can really see how big it actually is. It also made for some awesome photos. Those islands in the Lake? In a lot of cases those are actually mountain tops to mountains that were covered when the Lake was filled! Yeah, that's a lot of water!

Photo of the Day - Outer Banks Wave

Outer Banks, North Carolina, 2003. This is a photo of a wave at sunset down in the Outer Banks. I just thought it was kind of neat how the light of the setting sun was reflecting off of the wave. I was actually surprised by the waves in the Outer Banks because at least where we were they were a little smaller than I imagined they would be. For some reason having heard talk of rip tides and other hazards of swimming in the Outer Banks I figured the waves would be a lot bigger and rougher than they were. Other parts of the Outer Banks surely have bigger waves as there is much surfing and other water sports but it seemed relatively calm, at least from the beach, where we were.

Photo of the Day - Ogunquit

Ogunquit, Maine, July, 2004. These chairs were on a nice big lawn that had a wonderful view of the ocean and Marginal Way. I would love to be sitting on those chairs in the warm summer sun, than be here in snowy New Jersey. Of course it's probably even colder and snowier up there right now than it is here!

Photo of the Day - Spaceship Earth

Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida, Jan. 2004. Here's a shot of Spaceship Earth and some palm trees. I have so many photos of Spaceship Earth! There's a million angles to take photos from. I could probably post a Spaceship Earth Photo of the Day every day for at least a month, maybe even a few months. Something about the design that's on SE that really grabs me. I guess it's because I've always loved taking photos of things with patterns.

Photo of the Day - Bear

Bronx Zoo, 2002. Looking at the photos I took at the zoo that day really makes me want to go back to the Bronx Zoo and soon! Unfortunately, I think I'll have to wait until it's a lot warmer and not snowing out. I would guess that most of the animals are hiding out right about now, trying to keep warm.
But look at the claw on that sucker. I definitely wouldn't want to run into a bear in the wild that's for sure!

Photo of the Day - Mask

New Hope, PA, Fall, 2004. Jim and I like to visit New Hope, Pennsylvania, which is a town filled with craft stores on the Delaware River and Delaware Canal. Lambertville, New Jersey is connected to New Hope via a bridge and it's also another nice town, filled with antique stores. The way that we drive to get there is beautiful and goes right along both the Canal and River, through other towns, many of which are quite tiny. We last drove out there during the fall and I look forward to the next time we can take that drive again when it's warmer out.
This photo is of a mask that was hanging outside a store in New Hope. There were two of them that caught my eye and perhaps I'll post that pic tomorrow or one of the canal. What attracted me to these were the interesting expressions on the faces of the masks which were hand-carved. Lots of neat stuff like that in New Hope.

Randy Johnson is an Avid Photographer
What makes the incident between Randy Johnson and the WCBS cameraman even more hard to understand is that RJ is a passionate photographer who once worked for The Daily Trojan, the newspaper at the University of Southern California, where he was a student. While at the Daily Trojan he was a member of the newspaper's photography staff, taking photos of events and various other things around campus. So surely RJ must have some understanding of the need to get photos, or in this case film, on deadline to go with a story.
Not only did he take photos when he was in college but he still does photography to this day. Back on the West Coast I believe he's had at least one exhibition of his work and it's been said that he has some talent. So it's hard for me to understand how he could be so surly to someone who is essentially doing something very similar to what he loves to do.

Photo of the Day - Ice

High Point State Park, Sussex, NJ, January, 2005. It was so cool to see all the patterns the icy tree branches made as they froze in place. What was also cool was how super-quiet it was there since we were in the middle of the woods and there were very few people and cars around.

Photo of the Day - Ice

High Point State Park, Sussex, New Jersey, January, 2005. Yesterday Jim and I took a drive through Western New Jersey over to a nice little town in Pennsylvania, Milford, which has lots of cool craft and antique stores. On our way back we decided to stop off in High Point State Park, which as one can tell from the name is the highest point in the area, at 1,803 feet above sea level. It's possible to see Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey from the mounument up top.
Last week there was a storm which dumped mostly rain on Long Island and Eastern New Jersey. But up by High Point it was apparently a major ice storm. So every tree, bush, shrub and piece of grass was coated in a thick covering of ice. Which made for some really neat photos. I had been thinking that it would have been better if it was a sunny day but then I realized that if it was then the ice would probably have been melting and also the reflections of the sun off all the ice might have made it hard to take pics.
I've seen the result of ice storms before but I don't think I've ever seen ice this thick on everything before. I guess because of how high the elevation is there, it made for perfect conditions for the ice storm to cover everything entirely and then not melt off as easily as it might at a lower elevation. I could probably have spent all day taking photos there but unfortunately time was extremely limited. But I did get some and I think this week will be "ice" week in my blog.

Photo of the Day 2 - View From The Viaduct

Paulinskill Viaduct, Hainsburg, New Jersey, April, 2004. This is the view from the top of the viaduct. In the distance is the Delaware Water Gap. Notthe greatest photo but it gives a sense of how high the viaduct is and how far one can see from the top of it.

Photo of the Day - On Top of the Viaduct

Paulinskill Viaduct, Hainsburg, New Jersey, April, 2004. This is what it looks like on top of the Viaduct. After the viaduct was abandoned the railroad ties were taken out so all that's left is dirt and gravel. As you can see many of the railings are gone and the remaining ones are all rusted so they don't offer much protection. The viaduct has been abandoned so long that there are even trees growing up there.
In this photo you can see a dirt biker making his way across the viaduct. Riding along the old rail trails is very popular for both dirt bikers and ATV'ers and they go super-fast so caution is needed when one approaches.

Photo of the Day - Viaduct Arch

Paulinskill Viaduct, Hainsburg, New Jersey, 2002. Here's a close-up of one of the arches of the viaduct. You can just make out if you look closely enough that there's graffitti inside the arches way up high. If one knows the way in, it's possible to climb through the arches, high above the ground. There's an access point at one end and there's also a hole on top where the tracks used to be that one can climb into. I've never been into the viaduct as I've heard it can be a tricky walk-through and I'm pretty clumsy and I have no desire to fall 150 feet down. I get nervous enough when I'm up top near the edge since the railing is missing in many places up there!

Photo of the Day - Viaduct Graffitti

Paulinskill Viaduct, Hainsburg, New Jersey, November, 2002. That the viaduct is hidden in the woods is one of the things that makes it so cool but one drawback is that it makes it an easy and attractive target for vandals. So there are countless places where graffitti artists have practiced their craft. In some places there has been an effort to paint over it but for the most part it's a losing battle because the viaduct isn't under constant watch.
Of course the relatively remote location, without any houses nearby means that it's a place for kids to congregate and get into mischief. Every time that we visit the viaduct there are signs of parties and it's not unusual to see stuff shattered on the ground that has been thrown off the top. There are even a few shattered and rusted remains of cars that met their end via a trip off the viaduct.
There are plenty of rumors that satanists use the viaduct as a meeting place but I've never seen any signs of that other than some satanic graffitti that is most likely the work of teenagers. There are also rumors that there are bodies of workers who lost their lives building the viaduct buried in the concrete of the structure giving rise to ghost stories. But in all the places that I've looked and everything that I've read on the viaduct there is nothing to substantiate that.
We did see one strange thing, on our last visit. By the edge of the river, under the viaduct, there was a shrine to deceased fisherman. We actually couldn't take a close look at it since the bugs were too intense by the water but later I found a photo of the shrine at someone's website. I suspect that this person didn't lose their life at the viaduct but perhaps that was a favorite fishing spot. Each time we go to the viaduct there's always something new to see but that was one of the most unexpected.

Photo of the Day - Paulinskill Viaduct
Paulinskill Viaduct, Hainsburg, New Jersey, April, 2004. The Paulinskill Viaduct is a place that I love to go. There is something about this immense and mostly abandoned structure, hidden away in the woods, that I love. Built in 1909, the Viaduct featured seven arches, that march through the woods and above the Paulinskill River. The Viaduct was part of the Erie-Lackawanna line and was in active use through the 60's. It is possible that at some point in the future trains will run over the viaduct once more as NJ Transit is contemplating a plan for a rail line that would go into Pennsylvania over the viaduct.
At the time of when it was built I think this viaduct was one of the largest concrete viaducts in the world. So I post the above photo to show just how large this viaduct is. That's me looking so tiny underneath the viaduct and that's Jim's car parked at the side. It's very hard to take photos that do the viaduct justice because of how big it is and it was even harder the day that photo was taken since I was having some camera problems. But I like how tiny me and the car look underneath the viaduct. It's really incredible that something so large is not seen at all from Route 80 where hundreds of cars pass by each day.
I first discovered the Paulinskill Viaduct via Weird New Jersey which featured it as a weird abandoned place in New Jersey. Of course that magazine being what it is, they focused on many of the rumors, myths and ghost stories that surround the place. So Jim and I thought it would be a cool place to check out and we've been back three or four times since. I think we're definitely due to make a return trip!
I think this week will be viaduct week on my blog and I will post some photos and talk about some of the various things to be seen on and around the viaduct.

Photo of the Day - One More Abandoned Vermont

Addison, Vermont, December, 2004. Here's another shot of the abandoned house that we came across up in Vermont last weekend. The cool thing about this house was that all the glass in all the windows were gone so you could see straight though to daylight on the other side. I'm sure at sunrise or sunset or even just when it was a sunny day it would make for some interesting effects. Too bad that house is so far away otherwise I'd make frequent visits to take photos there. And probably get myself arrested in the process for trespassing! (The house is very close to the side of the road so I was just in the front yard taking photos, not really doing anything wrong.)
As I mentioned previously, no those "orbs" are not ghosts but snow falling. I practically got frostbite taking these photos! I definitely should have put my gloves on!

Photo of the Day - Ogunquit

Ogunquit, Maine. July, 2004. In a discussion about the horrible disaster of a few days ago the subject of abnormally high and low tides came up. Which reminded me of Ogunquit because when we were up there over the summer they were experiencing abnormally high and low tides. In fact the tides were so extreme that even long-time locals were amazed. One morning I walked along Marginal Way taking photos at sunrise and at that time it was low tide. The tide had gone way, way, way out to the point where areas that were always underwater were exposed. So this is a photo of what was exposed. It was very cool to see the patterns left on the sand from the retreating water. I took lots of photos because it was so neat looking.

Photo of the Day - More From Vermont

Addison, Vermont, 2004. This is another photo from that abandoned house that we saw during our drive in Vermont this past weekend. You can see that the former inhabitants left behind some of their furniture which certainly does raise some questions. No, those streaks are not ghosts, that is the snow that was falling. In some of the other photos the snow came out as "orbs" which many believe are signs that an abandoned house is haunted but it is very definitely snow, not ghosts.

Photo of the Day - Abandoned Vermont

Addison, Vermont. December, 2004. Yesterday Jim and I took a drive with his Mom up to Burlington, Vermont. We drove through some pretty rural areas with a lot of farmland. So it wasn't surprising that we came across a few abandoned houses. This one in Addison, Vermont, was of particular interest to me so on our way back to Jim's Mom's house we stopped so I could take some photos. Unfortunately, it was snowing lightly so that meant that some of the photos didn't come out as good as I would have liked but they are interesting so I will post a couple here over the next few days.
It's pretty unusual to come across an abandoned house like this one which isn't boarded up. Usually the owners or the town in which it is located boards it up so that kids don't go in to vandalize it or vagrants don't use it as a shooting gallery or a place to crash. There wasn't much evidence of too much of that happening at this house, maybe due to how close to the road it was, though it was apparent that people had been in and out over the years to some degree.
Whoever abandoned this house had left some of their furniture behind and that always makes one wonder why they left some of their possessions behind and what the full story is behind the house, something which I will probably never know. The furniture which could be seen inside the house though the broken windows definitely made for some interesting pictures. I think the greyness of the day, in spite of how the snow effected the photos, also added to the creepiness factor. I converted this photo to black and white, as I probably will to most of the others, to further emphasize the atmosphere of the house.

Photo of the Day - Spaceship Earth at Night

Spaceship Earth, Epcot, Walt Disney World, January, 2004. The side of Spaceship Earth all lit up at night. I had to take shots of Spaceship earth and all it's pretty colors really quick because it was starting to rain and I didn't want to ruin my camera. I'm actually surprised any of them came out but I guess it's a testament to how good the camera is.

Photo of the Day - More From Disney

Outside "The Living Seas," Epcot - Walt Disney World, Florida, January, 2004. Since Finding Nemo was a recent hit for Disney when I went to Walt Disney World they tried to incorporate some FN stuff both inside and outside of "The Living Seas" at Epcot. The plastic fish in this display were pretty bright and colorful but I thought they looked pretty neat in black and white too. That way nothing distracts from the big eyes and playful look on it's face.

Photo of the Day - Epcot

Epcot, Walt Disney World, Florida. January, 2004. I love Epcot! From the World Showcase to Innoventions to Journey into Imagination I love everything about Epcot and it's my favorite theme park that is part of Walt Disney World. When I went this past January I had a great time with my cousin and her friends, as well as seeing Melissa and Sean, but as I think I already mentioned once before in this blog, I loved taking photos of everything around me in Walt Disney World, but particularly in Epcot. There's just so much to see and Disney does a great job of making everything very photogenic.
My favorite ride at Epcot is Spaceship Earth. It's dated now as compared to when it was first built and it's no thrill ride but there's something about it that I've always loved. Maybe I just remember riding it as a child so I have fond memories of it. I also love taking photos of the ball, both during the day and when it's lit up at night.
The other thing I love about Epcot is the food at the restaurants in the World Showcase. Of course it's all Americanized to a degree but it's neat to have a variety of food from different countries to be able to try. My favorite restaurant is the Norweign one which is an all-you-can-eat buffet. They've changed it slightly in that the cold foods are still buffet style but you have to order the hot foods though you can have as much as you want of anything you want. I absoluely love the food there and my mouth is watering thinking of all the high-quality yummy smoked fish and meatballs and pasta I had when I ate there. I was the only person by myself and I'm so tiny so they were probably laughing at seeing me at a buffet but I definitely chowed down on the food there! Yum!
Maybe I'll make this week's Photo of the Day have a Disney theme. I took so many photos on that trip that I could do a Disney Photo of the Day probably every day for the next couple of years!

Photographing "The Apprentice"
Reed Hoffman's company, Blue Pixel, has as one of their clients Mark Burnett, who is the creator of reality shows such as "Survivor" and "The Apprentice." They first started working with Burnett when he needed photographers to cover the Eco-Challenge adventure races that he organized, which is where a lot of the inspiration for "Survivor" came from.
At any rate, in the above article from sportsshooter.com, Hoffman discusses shooting "The Apprentice" and other similar shows and how he's shooting in a documentary-style, which is apparently very different than much of the usual work that he does. When he shoots on reality shows he has free reign to take pictures without having to ask permission first and he can take whatever he wants as long as he and his camera don't make any noise or otherwise get in the way of the shooting for the show. Apparently he could have access to them 24-hours a day without any restrictions. They had to ignore him completely as if he wasn't even there, as all contestants on reality shows are required to do for all the cameras that are around them, and he couldn't speak to them either. So basically he has to be invisible but he can take whatever pictures he wants, or in reality whatever pictures will satisfy his client.
I would guess that all TV shows have photographers of some sort that work with them periodically capturing images, not just for publicity purposes but for archival purposes as well. It's not something that I gave much thought to since TV shows are already been caught on tape. But it's just as important to have still images as well.

Photo of the Day - Mike Mussina

Mike Mussina. New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers. 2001. Now that the server isn't having issues due to every Yankee fan online trying to get onto NYYFans to discuss the potential Randy Johnson trade, I can finally post a photo of the day. Of course now I'm about to go to sleep and I'm so tired I don't have much to say. So I just figured I would post a shot of my favorite Yankee, Mike Mussina. This was another one of those great days at the stadium where the weather was perfect and I had a great seat to take photos. I just wish Mike's face wasn't in the shadows quite as much.

Photo of the Day - Waves Crashing

Oqunquit, Maine, July, 2004. If I were walking along Marginal Way in Oqunquit, Maine right now I'd be freezing my ass off but at least I would be by the ocean! I love walking along Marginal Way seeing the waves crash over the rocks and make their way to shore and I wish it wasn't so far to get there. The sights, the sounds and the smells of the ocean are all wonderful to me.
Actually it would be pretty neat to see Marginal Way in the winter. It would be pretty much deserted and very, very cold but I would be interested to see where the snow and ice builds up on all the rocks. It's probably pretty crazy during a storm! Might make for some cool photos.

Photo of the Day - Orange Rose

Elizabeth Park Roses, West Hartford, CT, June, 2002. I hope I haven't posted this one before but I really like this shot. I love taking photos of roses though I didn't get to do any of that this summer. That is definitely something I will have to do next summer, especially since there's a park not too far from Jim's house where there is a nice rose garden. Roses are so cool and they come in so many more shades than just red. Though roses aren't my favorite flower overall, I do enjoy taking photos of roses more than any other flower other than tulips.

Old Westbury Gardens, Old Westbury, New York, 2002. I think this shot is pretty neat. Nice detail on the flower. Chicago Fire Might Have Destroyed Rare Photos
There was no loss of life in the major fire in the 43-story LaSalle Bank Building in Chicago a couple of days ago but the company is afraid that part of a large collection of rare photographs that they have were either damaged or destroyed. The collection contains works by Ansel Adams, Matthew Brady and William Henry Fox Talbot, and the collection is considered to be one of the oldest and largest collections of photography held by a corporation.
Luckily, about 1,000 pieces in the collection were in temperature controlled vaults on a floor much lower than where the fire was but other photographs were hung on the walls of offices throughout the entire building. It's always a shame when there's huge fire like this especially when people are injured (30), and how the fire effects people is of course the most important thing rather than any loss of property, but it's also a little sad that important works by major photographers are probably lost forever.

"Photo" of the Day - Something a Little Different

Ogunquit, Maine, 2004. I put photo in quotes because obviously this isn't really a photo anymore as it's heavily manipulated and abstracted in Photoshop. It was a part of a wave crashing on some rocks and I just got to playing with various effects until I got to that.
Looking through my Maine photos is a reminder that I need to finish going through all the photos I took up in Ogunquit over the summer. Somehow I went through all the photos I took in Dover but I never finished all my Maine photos or the ones from the National Zoo. There are some decent photos in there too I think. *Hangs head in shame.* I'm going to have to try to work on them little by little even if it's just a matter of doing ten each night and eventually I'll get done. That way I'll have more material for Photo of the Day! After that I have to burn a bunch onto CD too.

Photo of the Day - Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park, Maine. 2002. I wish I was there right now! I love the Maine coast as I've mentioned before and Acadia is particularly beautiful. I was there with my parents as a child and my Mom and I took a day trip there when we were on vacation in Camden further down the coast. It was probably a three hour ride each way to Acadia but I was insistant that if I was that close I was going. I'm so glad that I did! It was a boiling hot day but I had such a great time. Everywhere we turned we saw something scenic and beautiful. One day I want to go back when I have the time to really explore a lot more of the park.

Jimmy Chin: Extreme Sports Photographer
A Challenging Photo Assignment
Every professional photographer has something that they specialize in whether it's weddings, commercial shoots, photojournalism, sports, portraits, nature, etc... Jimmy Chin is no different but his choosen subject to photograph brings a whole host of special challenges literally above and beyond what many other photographers have to plan for. Chin photographs extreme sports but especially mountain climbers. In the article above he discusses how he got a series of shots of snowboarder Steven Koch as he attempted to be the first to summit Mt. Everest and then take a never before attempted route down on his snowboard, as part of his quest to snowboard all Seven Summits.
Every photographer has to worry about bringing the right equipment and capturing useable shots. But Chin is limited to bringing just one camera and one lens on most climbs with him. He must also plan for very extreme weather conditions, sometimes extremely cold or at the opposite end, extremely hot, both of which can be very damaging to a camera. Finding a safe vantage point to take his photos can also be a challenge. In addition, obviously Chin must be able to climb the mountain himself and keep up with his subjects.
So taking all of into consideration it makes his photos, and those of other photographers who also work under similar conditions, even more amazing. While they might take a couple of pictures here and there, most people who are mountain-climbing are focused on the climb. It is dangerous to do otherwise considering how physically and mentally difficult mountain climbing can be. This is especially true on a mountain like Everest which has claimed many lives over the years. Based on his website, also linked above, Chin works in a variety of conditions but regardless of where he is shooting he obviously works very hard to get his shots.

Photo of the Day - Tulips

Tulips, 2004. When all else fails post tulips pictures! I've got tons of flower photos so they will be a frequent Photo of the Day subject. The colors seem off on this pic for some reason though it looks fine in other places than this journal. I have a few longer Photo of the Day entries that I want to do but yet again I find myself having run out of time and needing to get to sleep. Sometime soon...

Should Newspapers Print Photos of Illegal Activities?
Photos of Drug Addict Shooting Up Creates Controversy
Rob Finch, an award-winning photographer, took a series of photos of a homeless drug addict going about her day-to-day life for an article in The Oregonian. Some of the photos he took included ones of her shooting heroin which were subsequently printed in the paper after some internal debate by the paper's editorial staff. The controvery over these photos is two-fold. One, what was Finch's responsibility to stop this woman from engaging in illegal activity and whether he was a party to what she was doing by being there taking photos without intervening. And second, should the paper have published the photos?
On the first issue while Finch was with the woman he stressed that he didn't want her to do anything different than she normally would when he was around and using and selling drugs was part of her day-to-day routine. So apparently if he was going to get an honest portrayal of her, this was part of the package. In addition, Finch says he spoke to her more than once, concerned about her safety but he realized that he was there to document, not save her. More than that, even if Finch were to intervene and stop her from shooting up while he was there to take pictures of her more than likely she would have just saved the drugs until when he wasn't around. A photographer who is there for just one day could not possibly say or do anything to prevent this woman from being homeless or a drug addict. Finch had a job to do which was to document this woman's life, which as one might expect from a homeless drug addict often isn't pretty.
As for the second issue one concern that the paper had was that the most common heroin addict in that area is not African-American females but white males so they felt this might not be an accurate portrayal of the average heroin addict and might contribute to racial stereotyping. But as noted in the column this was a woman who wanted her story told and publishing the photos gives light to a problem that exists and effects many people of all different backgrounds. The paper made sure to mention prominantly that the most common heroin addict in the area are white males so they found a way to handle that issue. The other concern was probably that it might be irresponsible to publish photos of illegal activity but as one of the editors points out they shouldn't be covering up problems in their community. The photographer in question did nothing to encourage the illegal activity, he simply documented it. Which is what the paper is doing, reporting on a segment of the population that doesn't get much attention.

Photo of the Day - Unusual Bicycle

Cape May, New Jersey, 2002. Here's a close-up of a very unusual bike which I saw on one of my trips to Cape May. It had all sorts of sea glass, shells and other beach found objects embedded in the frame. Definitely perfect for someone who lives by the ocean! It was just so creative how the owner decorated this bike.
I did wonder if they had found all that sea glass or bought it somewhere. Jewelry made out of sea glass is pretty popular these days so a lot of places sell sea glass or more commonly sea glass imitations. It would certainly have been a labor of love to have collected all that sea glass for the bike because with that much of it finding all of it would have taken forever. So I tend to think they bought it in bulk somewhere.
At any rate, it was a great bike and I wish I could have found the owner somewhere to find out how they created it.

Photo of the Day - Bailey

Bailey snout! I took this picture a while ago but strangely Bailey is recreating it right now. Ok, not so strange. He snuffles and sucks on his toys all the time - one of his most favorite things to do that doesn't involve cookies or a walk.

Photo of the Day - Flowers

2001. One of the rare photos of white flowers that I've taken that the white actually looks white and not too under or over-exposed. Just a random flower shot that I like. Not the greatest of all photos or anything but there's something about how close up the photo is that I like - the flowers were actually pretty small.

Photo of the Day - Kevin Brown

August, 2004. New York Yankees vs. Oakland A's. The Yankees totally rocked Barry Zito to win this game. I got to watch this game from an awesome seat and I got some great, great pictures of the action on the field. I had a lot of fun going to this game, especially since the Yankees won.
A lot of fans are debating about how useful Kevin Brown will be next season to the Yankees and if they can and should trade him. Well, it's going to be very difficult to trade a player with his contract, with chronic health problems, who broke his hand by deliberately punching a wall. So I would say the Yankees are stuck with him unless they are willing to pay a big chunk of the money owed to him. In which case if they have to pay for him anyway they may as well pay him to pitch for them. According to his agent he's taking part in a vigorous off-season conditioning program so hopefully that will work to strengthen his back. When he's healthy he's capable of being an outstanding pitcher and as much as I don't like Brown it would really benefit the Yankees if he could pitch well next season. It's too bad that even if starts the season healthy, he's at risk of going down due to his back at any time.

Photo of the Day - Kurt Busch

In honor of his Championship win here's a photo I took of Kurt Busch at the Dover race during driver introductions. He was one of the few drivers who seemed to smile at me a little when he saw me taking his picture but more likely he was just happy that finally another driver was getting more boos then him since Robby Gordon had just become public enemy #1.
Kurt's past attitude, something which he has appeared to work on at least publically, is definitely one reason why people don't like him. There's of course the incident with Jimmy Spencer as well. But sometimes I wonder if Kurt isn't very well liked because he's not that attractive. He's not a pretty boy like Kasey Kahne or handsome like Jimmie Johnson. Kurt's got big ears, he's goofy looking and until recently he hasn't seemed very polished in interviews. It shouldn't be surprising as appearances play a big role in how people are judged in our day to day lives so why wouldn't it be the case for Kurt as well?

Forum Party 2001 - The Visit by Roger Clemens

Some people stopping by my blog probably either came via the link in my sig on NYYFans.com or are at least familiar with the fact that I help Jim run the site. So every year we have a forum party in which a bunch of people from the forum get together, have a little party and then to go a Yankee game. This actually dates back even longer than NYYFans existed back to the days of the old Yankees.com forum when some of the same people had a gathering through that site.
So in 2001 the pitcher Roger Clemens, then with the Yankees, now with the Houston Astros (unless he re-retires), stopped by the forum party to say "hi." As you might imagine this was quite a thrill for everyone in attendance. Most Yankees with the exception of Mike Mussina aren't big on fan appearances so it was pretty unusual for him to show up someplace to visit with fans, let alone in a parking lot outside of Yankee Stadium. But perhaps not so unusual when one knows that one of our users at NYYfans.com at the time, was Roger Clemens' sister who was also in attendance that day. She had arranged for Clemens to give a signed ball to another of our users she was friendly with, CalifYanksFan, who was celebrating his 50th birthday via a trip to New York from California.
The funny thing is that every car going into the parking lot was as one might imagine charged $10 for parking. Well, the parking attendant apparently didn't recognize Clemens because he/she charged him for parking! Or maybe they did recognize him and didn't care.
Now I've detailed previously that I don't care for Clemens too much but this was a cool thing he did that day.

Photo of the Day

Old Westbury Gardens, Long Island, New York, 2002. Since purple is my favorite color of course I love to take photos of purple flowers. Lavender flowers like these are actually a lot easier to photograph well than true purple flowers. Some of the deep purple flowers it seems hard at times to capture the richness of the color accurately. But anything purple always catches my eye.

Photo of the Day

Cape May, 2001. I think this is a close-up of a lamp if I remember correctly. I was just looking through my photos and it looked kind of neat so I figured I would throw it up here. Most of my photos from Cape May are of the Victorian inns and houses but this is something a little different.
I like taking close-ups and abstract photos. Taking a photo of a piece of something rather than the whole can really create some unusual photos.

Photo of the Day

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks, North Carolina, July, 2003. This is an infrared shot of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Jim and I went down to the Outer Banks in the summer of 2003 and one of the things I really enjoyed was seeing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse since I'm a bit of a lighthouse fanatic. It was pretty cool to see in person. I would have liked to have climb to the top but aside from it being a boiling hot day the wait to get in was several hours long so we opted not to do it.
This morning Jim and I watched a show on one of the high definition channels that had been filmed back in 1998 about the raging debate over whether or not the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse should be moved from it's original location to a location futher back from the ocean. Many were opposed to the move but it ended up happening so that the lighthouse wouldn't fall victim to erosion as the ocean was moving closer and closer. I remember when they were actually moving the lighthouse, a process which took 23 days, because they had a webcam set-up and it was pretty interesting to check it out from time to time. More information about the lighthouse move can be found here: Moving the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
It's pretty amazing to think that they were able to move such a huge structure that had been in one spot for so long and get it to a new location where it looks like it's always been there.

Photo of the Day

Andy Pettitte. August 19, 2000. New York Yankees vs. Anaheim Angels. This was a particularly good day for picture taking so a lot of the photos I took that day will probably show up here eventually. I ended up being able to sit pretty close to the field so I got some nice action shots. I took some good shots of Andy pitching the year prior but I especially like this shot because I caught him mid-motion.
It's amazing sometimes how the pitchers contort their bodies. Sometimes it looks like they're made out of elastic. The pitching motion puts a lot of stress on the pitchers bodies because it's not a natural motion. So the day after they've pitched a lot of times pitchers have all sorts of aches and pains especially as they grow older. But it's the nagging injuries and sharp pains that wont go away that finally do them in.
Andy pitched for the Yankees from 1995 through 2003 and was a big contributor to the Yankees success during those years. When he became a free agent at the end of the 2003 season they offered him a new deal but his hometown Houston Astros offered him a much more attractive deal so he signed with them. As it turned out it was a good thing that the Yankees didn't re-sign Pettitte as much as it pained a lot of fans because he had elbow problems more than once during the 2004 season and ended up having to undergo season ending surgery in August.

Photo of the Day

2001. I'm not exactly sure where I took this one but probably on campus. Back in the summer of 2001 was the first time I got my hands on a digital camera courtesy of my good friend Melissa who lent me hers. I spent so much time after she lent it to me taking close up photos of the flowers on campus, playing around and just being amazed by how easy it was to use and download pictures onto the computer. Eventually, I bought that camera off of her and it served me well for a while until I decided to upgrade to a brand-new one of my own with more mega-pixels, therefore better picture quality since Melissa's was less than 2MPs.
This photo is kind of grainy but there's something about it that I like. Maybe it's the colors or just the feel of the photo. My photos are never perfect and I often forget to use the proper techniques to take the pictures but somehow I come up with some photos that I'm happy with. Maybe that's why I take so many photos whenever I'm some where - the more pics I have the better the chances that I'll come up with something decent!

Photo of the Day

Walt Disney World. January, 2004. I'm not sure these are still there but for a while visitors to the Magic Kingdom were greeted by lots of Mickeys each one decorated differently. They were very creatively done. One might have a motif of a particular color like purple or silver; another might have a theme like the Red Sox or music. But they all were very vivid and eye-catching.
A few months ago I thought I read that they were removed. If that's the case I wonder where they went. Are they in storage somewhere, standing at attention, waiting until the next time they see the light of day? Or have they been sent to another park to serve their time there until they are boxed up and shipped elsewhere? So much time must have been spent creating each one so I hope they are on display somewhere that they can be seen and appreciated.

Photo of the Day

Dover International Speedway, September, 2004. In honor of Kevin Harvick being a bit of a bad boy after the conclusion of today's race in Phoenix, here's a photo I took of the number on his car at the Dover race. For some reason I think the car numbers look really neat cropped tight like that. Of course to non-Nascar fans the #29 has no meaning but any Nascar fan who looks at that immediately connects it to Kevin.
I only watched half the race so I can't really comment on all that much until I see it. But I will say that it's a shame that Kevin apparently challenged Kasey Kahne to a fight after Kahne bumped him on pit road because he wasn't too happy with the hard racing between the two at the end of the race. Back in the day drivers might have been able to fight but these days cooler heads have to prevail otherwise the drivers will find themselves sitting out races. Luckily Harvick was pulled away from Kahne's car so nothing much came out of it.

Photo of the Day

Kearney, New Jersey. 2002. Jim and I went to the park with Bailey (the earlier photo I posted of Bailey comes from this trip) and we encountered some baby squirrels. Well, actually they seemed to mistake me for "Mommy" which either says something scary about me or something about the eyesight of baby squirrels!
Soon after getting to the park we saw these two baby squirrels. Or more like were accosted by these squirrels who kept trying to get closer and closer and closer to me. I kept backing away because I didn't want to either get bitten or get too close and get my scent on them which would make their Mommy squirrel not want to be around them. Well, the more I backed away the more they tried to follow. Luckily, they eventually got distracted by some acorns or something similar because I thought they were going to end up trying to get in the car with us!
Unfortunately, when we had first got the park we smelled something dead and given that I never saw an adult squirrel around these two I think their Mommy might have met an unfortunate end. I don't know if they sensed my sympathetic nature and thought I could help them or they were just curious but I've never encountered any squirrels who have behaved quite like this and given how many squirrels there are on the Hofstra campus I've come across a lot of squirrels!

Photo of the Day

Camden, Maine. August, 2002. In 2002 I was lucky enough to get to go to Maine twice, once with Jim to Ogunquit and once with my parents to the Camden/Lincolnville area. Camden is known for it's harbor and there are lots of gorgeous boats docked there. So while we were there we took a ride on a big sail boat up the coast a little bit. I like taking close-ups of things and the way this rope was coiled on the boat caught my eye.
I actually had another Maine photo that I wanted to use tonight but I decided to add it to my list of photos that I want to use as "Photo of the Day" in the near future when I'm not so tired and I have more time since they're all ones that I want to write more than a paragraph or two about. I have a huge event at work going on right now that we've been working like dogs for the past few weeks and now that it's here I'm working 15-16 hour days until it's over. I'm very happy it will be over after Saturday!

Photo of the Day

The Mainstay Inn. Cape May, New Jersey. May, 2004. As some people reading this might know, I love Cape May on the Jersey shore. It's a beautiful Victorian town full of lots of bed and breakfasts and yummy restaurants.
Every time I go to Cape May I walk around town checking out some of my favorite spots. There are a few streets I love to walk down because every house whether it's a private residence or bed & breakfast is absolutely gorgeous. Though I've never stayed there The Mainstay Inn looks like one of the nicest to me. There is so much attention to detail outside and from what I've seen of the photos inside as well. I'm hoping that one day I can stay there though it is on the pricey side.
The main building of the Mainstay dates back to 1872 and was built as a private gambling club. In the 1890's gambling was outlawed and the Mainstay was a private house from then until 1949 when it was opened as a summer guest house. In 1976 it was purchased by new owners who renovated it and opened it as a bed & breakfast. In April of this year ownership changed hands once again but the Mainstay continues on as a b&b.
Even though I've been to Cape May a bunch of times and seen a lot of the same places over and over I never get tired of taking photos in Cape May. I'm always trying to get shots that capture the Victorian character of the town. I don't know if it's that so many of the structures are so old or that they are so pretty but I'm just so fascinated by the town.
As I mentioned above, another great thing about Cape May are all the delicious restaurants. The Washington Inn, considered by many to be one of the best restaurants in New Jersey is a good one with an expansive wine list. Tisha's and Freda's, both featuring creative menus, are also excellent. Aleathea's in the Inn of Cape May is one I like to go to for lunch. At lunchtime it's pretty casual and I enjoy eating out on the porch, right across the street from the beach.
Just a really fun place to go.

Photo of the Day

Walt Disney World, 1998. I've been to Walt Disney World in Florida twice now. I loved going there each time! There are lots of cool rides, I loved a lot of the places we went to eat at and this most recent time I had a great time with my cousin. But I also love going to Walt Disney World to take pictures.
The above photo was taken when I went in 1998 and it's of a small bronze statue of one of the characters that is outside of Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom. There are a whole bunch of these little statues there and for statues they seem to have a lot of personality! Both times I went I was able to take some cool shots of the statues and they were especially interesting in black and white.
I'll probably end up posting plenty of photos from Walt Disney World as Photo of the Day, especially since I took so many when I went with my cousin this past January. The first day and a half that I was down there Liz was at her conference so that left me with plenty of time to wander on my own. And I definitely made good use of my time!

Photo of the Day

Hofstra University. Spring 2004. Every year Hofstra plants hundreds of tulips in honor of the Dutch heritage of the university. So each year I take lots and lots of pictures of all the tulips. They try to plant different kinds in different places so I never know what kinds of tulips to expect. It's always fun to see what got planted when they start to bloom. After so many years of taking photos of the tulips there are definitely some colors that I'm partial to taking photos of. The oranges seem to always make for some good shots but I also like reds, pinks and multi-colored ones. The only tulips that I have trouble taking good shots of seem to be the whites.
Unfortunately this photo seems to have lost a little something after I scanned it but I like to take close-ups of the tulips. It's really cool to see the detail in the flower petals. Each tulip is totally unique and each day as the flowers open more and more they look completely different.
Overall, I just love the vivid color of tulips. They are definitely my favorite flower. I would love to go to Holland where they have huge fields of tulips and take pictures there!

Photo of the Day

Ocean Grove, NJ. 2002. Jim and I went to Ocean Grove on the Jersey Shore with Jim's sister, her husband, Jim's Mom and his grandmother. Jim's Mom used to live in Bradley Beach a few towns over before she moved to upstate New York and has always liked Ocean Grove. OG is like a scaled down version of Cape May with some Victorian houses and bed & breakfasts. It was founded as a Methodist retreat and there is still a very heavy Methodist presence in town.
We stayed two blocks from the beach so I got up each morning at sunrise to take pictures. There was a pier nearby as well and I was fascinated by the waves crashing to shore under the pier. I could have stood there all day watching. I was also suprised by how big the waves were there, though really I shouldn't have been since there is some surfing done on the Jersey shore, particularly in South Jersey.
I would love to go back to Ocean Grove. It's a cute little town and we had a good time there. But the reason I want to go back is to take more pictures under that pier. It's amazing sometimes I just fall in love with places I've taken pictues of and I can't get them out of my head like this pier from two years ago. Or the rock on Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine which is deserving of it's own entry in the future.

Cool Shot!
Pedro Martinez of the Red Sox as taken by baseball photographer Al Bello. This is thinking out of the box when it comes to baseball photography! I've seen a couple of other blur shots like this over the years but this is one of the best. Usually a lot of photos of the pitchers in action tend to look the same so it's always neat to see something different. It almost looks like a painting, not a photograph.

Photo of the Day

Paul O'Neill then of the New York Yankees, now retired. Batting practice. August 6, 2001. This is one of my favorite photos that I took of one of my favorite players. O'Neill was a very intense player and he rarely smiled during games. In fact, he was more likely to be scowling, disappointed in himself for not getting a hit in every at-bat. But during batting practice he would sometimes allow himself time to smile and laugh with his friends, when he wasn't obsessively practicing his swing. I saw him interacting with someone and I trained my camera on him and I was lucky enough to get this shot.
Batting practice is always one of the best times to take pictures. Players are more relaxed during batting practice too so they will joke arond with each other which makes for some good shots. I like to take photos during the game too but I enjoy the more causual shots as well. Prior to 9/11 I used to take a monopod and a long lens with me to games which would allow me to take really close-up pictures. Once they clamped down on security I could no longer bring that set-up to the games but when I could it allowed me to take some awesome shots of the players. I love capturing shots of the players that reflect some of their personality and that is true of this shot of O'Neill.
I eventually went to an autograph signing he did and had him sign a copy of this photo.

Photo of the Day

Bailey, Jim's adorable pug "smiling" for the camera. He's such a sweet dog and always wants to please his humans, though he can be a stubborn one sometimes too. All he wants to do is be around his humans as much as possible. Which usually means that we're around he's trying to sit on our laps or when we're in bed trying to lie on one of us. He has separation anxiety of a sort so when we leave to go out he seems to think we're never coming back and he gets very upset when I leave each Sunday evening to go back to Long Island. But he is one of the cutest and most affectionate dogs I've ever encountered. When he looks up at me with those bulgy eyes it's hard to deny him an extra cookie!
Now that I've had a pug and been around other pugs I don't think I would ever have any other dog. I love their smooshed in faces and how much personality they have. Pugs generally aren't known for being very active dogs but they do have playful natures and Bailey loves to have a lot of squeaky toys on hand that he can play with and try to de-squeak. Just absolutely wonderful and fun dogs to be around.

Boston Herald Readers Outraged Over Graphic Front Page Photos of a College Student's Death
After the Red Sox won the ALCS against the Yankees drunken college students in Boston went on a mini-riot to "celebrate." As the police were trying to quell the disturbance 21-year old Emerson college student Victoria Snelgove, who was an innocent bystander, was accidentally hit in the eye by what is supposed to be a non-lethal projectile fired by a police officer. Unfortunately she died from her injuries.
So the Boston Herald, not known for their journalistic integrity, printed a full-color photo showing Ms. Snelgrove collapsed and presumably dying on the sidewalk, on the front page of today's paper, along with an additional black and white photo inside depicting a bystander checking her pulse. As one might imagine Herald readers were horrified to pick up the paper and see these images.
In the column above Dan Kennedy of the Boston Phoenix argues that the Herald hit a new low by printing these photos which add nothing to the story that couldn't be known via the accompanying article. I tend to agree that the Herald probably erred in using these photos, at least in full color on the front page. However, photojournalists do important work in that their images often capture newsworthy events. Life isn't always pretty and working photographers can't put their cameras down in spite of ugly or distrurbing events that unfold in front of them. So the question is how and when should photos like these be used?
Many readers felt that the photos are insensitive to the family. I definitely agree with that. Here is a young woman who is well-loved by her friends and family and the horrible last few minutes of her life are printed in the newspaper for all to see. I would guess that is extremely disturbing to say the least. However, from the newspaper's point of view there are probably many family members of the subjects of photos and stories that they run who are upset by what goes in the paper. So the newspaper has to weigh sensitivity to the family versus the newsworthyness and importance of the photos.
Then the newspaper has to take into account the community they serve and what the reaction to these photos would be. Small town newspapers usually shy away from graphic photos while bigger newspapers that serve a more tolerant and perhaps less sensitive readership have a tendency to run more graphic photos. We saw this in relation to prior photos that are referenced in Kennedy's column such as some recent photos of American soldiers who were killed in Iraq - some newspapers ran those photos front and center but others shied away because they knew that their readers who be extremely upset.
There is also an argument that could be made that says that a newspaper has a responsiblity to report the news and print photos regardless of how their readers react. Some stories should envoke horror, anger, disgust and sadness from readers because they are horrible stories. I don't think stories should be sugar-coated to go down easier as that tends to lead to facts being omitted. Graphic photos could also lead to a story having more of an impact and that is what some people thought was the case in relation to the photos in the Herald. But words can be just as powerful as a photo.
Graphic photos shouldn't be used specifically to sell newspapers and I suspect that is the case with the Herald. Just like when the New York Post used a graphic photo of a woman comitting suicide by jumping off a building on their front cover, I think the Herald was aware of the shock value of the photo and wanted to use it to move papers. Which is definitely the wrong reason to use the photos. In fact the Herald is probably enjoying all the attention they're getting from running these photos which is a shame because it takes away from the real story - that an innocent bystander, happy that her favorite team won, ended up dead instead of back in her dorm room at the end of the night.

Photo of the Day

Brookdale Park, New Jersey. 2002.
I used to really love taking photos of flowers, especially roses and tulips. The colors and the patterns that could be found within the flowers always intrigued me. But in the past couple of years I don't get as much enjoyment as I once did from taking photos of flowers. I try to challenge myself to always look for photos that are somehow different than the standard flower photos and it seems harder and harder to come up with something unusual or eye-catching. So I don't think I get the same satisfaction I once did from this type of photo.
But I'm sure if I got back to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania or went to the Bronx Botanical Gardens when everything was in bloom I'd find plenty to inspire me. The one time I was at Longwood Gardens it seemed like everywhere I turned there were beautiful flowers to take pictures of. I'd also like to check out some gardens in another part of the county where there are some plantings that can't be found up here. It's too bad the day that I was visiting Melissa and Co. in Orlando the rain prevented us from going to the gardens there which I've heard are really nice.

Nags Head, Outer Banks, July, 2003. I love the ocean. There's something about the endless waves and their power that has always drawn me. I can spend hours watching the waves crash onto shore. But as I mentioned in another entry I also love walking the shore, picking up stones, shells and if I'm lucky some sea glass. There are some beaches where nothing much washes up but there are others that are filled with all kinds of cool stuff that's been tossed and tumbled by the waves until it finally washes up on shore.
When I was 8 or 9 I went with my parents to Nova Scotia in Canada. It wasn't one of our better vacations but one of the highlights was finding what appears to be a rock with a fossil on it while we were on a sand bar. My father went through a period in which he liked to fly kites and this particular sand bar was known as a good place to fly kites because of the winds. The only catch was that you had to be very aware of the tides otherwise you'd get stranded by the advancing water.
So my father was really into flying his kite as my Mom and I explored and suddenly we noticed that tide was coming in... super-fast. We were rushing to gather our stuff and get off the sand bar as quickly as we could when a grey flat rock caught my eye. So I grabbed it just before the advancing water could cover it and immediately noticed what looked like a fossil of some sort of shrimp-like creature tail and all. I took it home of course and eventually took it to a gem & mineral show to see if anyone knew what it was. No one could say for certain what it was but they agreed that there was a good chance it actually a fossil of something. That was just the most awesome thing to me that I found something like that!
I still have that rock. From time to time I look at it and hope that one day I will find something else as cool as that washed up on shore. Unfortunately, on my trip to the Outer Banks I didn't find anything too interesting on the beach but Jim and I had fun there.
The other highlight of the Nova Scotia trip was our visit to Oak Island where legend has it there is buried treasure. I'll have to discuss Oak Island in a future entry because that's an interesting place.

Bronx Zoo. 2002. Taking photos of the gorillas in the gorilla exhibit at the Bronx Zoo was really neat. The gorillas are so expressive and they get up close to the glass that separates them from visitors. Just as much as people watch what the gorillas are doing, many of the gorillas watch what the people on the other side of the glass are doing. They are fascinating animals.
A lot of photographers look down on taking photos in zoos. Mostly because the animals aren't in the wild, they're in a fake and forced setting. Well, I know I'm not going to get to photograph gorillas in their natural environment so I'm more than happy to take advantage of the only way I can see gorillas or other animals up-close.

Sunset over the Webhannet River in Wells, Maine. July, 2004. Jim and I were driving back to Ogunquit from meeting his Mom for dinner in Cape Porpoise (she was also on vacation in Maine) and we decided to take a ride though Wells just to see what it was like. Definitely not as nice as Ogunquit but we were in the right time at the right place so I could take this sunset shot.
I have a feeling a lot of my Maine photos will be showing up here. I love Maine, particularly the Maine coast, and if I lived closer I would probably be up there every summer.

Photo of the Day

This is an infrared photo I took at Old Westbury Gardens here on Long Island two years ago. I love the effect of the infrared photos. In some ways it's similar to black and white photography but there's that glow in the photos too. There's something so different about the way it makes everything look. A little creepy, a little magical in some shots. This one reminds me of a painting, not a photograph. The best infrared shots are when you've got some cool clouds in the sky because they come out really neat in infrared.
Infrared photography is done with a special filter and in the case of a film camera, special film. It can be tricky with a film camera because the filter is so dark that you have to pre-set everything without the filter, then put the filter on and shoot blindly. However, with some digital cameras, you can just throw the filter on and take pictures just like putting any other filter on because of the kind of sensor they have. My old Olympus digital camera is one of those that makes it very easy to do infrared photograpy. The photos come out of the camera with a reddish cast to them and I adjust them in Photoshop to take that out and make a few other adustments.
I was just thinking that it's been so long since I've really done much infrared photography. I took a few shots while I was in Maine over the summer but nothing too great. I almost always use my Canon Digital Rebel these days so to take the infrared photos with the Olympus camera I would have to have two cameras with me and that's pesty a lot of times since they're both so big. I'm going to have to make an effort to make a point of taking the old camera with me somewhere to take some infrared shots. Though I may have to wait until the spring when the trees and all the vegetation is back in full bloom because that will make for much better shots.
I've seen some really neat infrared shots taken in cemetaries so a really old cemetary might be a good place for me to go. There's a very old cemetary down the road from the house where I grew up in Connecticut that might be good. I think it dates back to the Revolutionary War if I remember correctly. It's small and somewhat overgrown but from what I remember it has a lot of character. A friend of mine as a child used to live next door and we would go there and play sometimes until one day someone passing by saw us and complained to her mother because she thought we might be up to mischief there. If only she knew that we were actually quite respectful and interested in all the old graves and the lives of the people who were buried there.
